Hi, my brother received an offer from TCS and was provided with the joining date. However, today he received an email stating that the Background Verification (BGV) failed and the offer has been cancelled. All his details were provided correctly, so we are unsure of what went wrong. Could you please advise on how to proceed from here?
Thank you.

It's really unfortunate that this happened, but did you cross-check the document before submitting it to the company? If you are sure everything was correct, instead of sitting idle, it would be better to try to understand at what point it went wrong by requesting assistance from HR. Try to correct it if possible.

Importance of Background Verification (BGV) in Top MNCs
In top MNCs, Background Verification (BGV) is very important with regard to your qualifications. This is primarily due to issues related to percentages in your 10th, 12th, graduation, and post-graduation results, or in case there is a gap in your educational qualifications. Please provide justification for any discrepancies in your schooling and qualifications that align with the aforementioned criteria.

Firstly, it's sad that your brother received an offer that was later withdrawn after the Background Verification (BGV). I wonder if your brother checked and rechecked all the information provided. People are usually very careful when they undergo such scrutiny.
Approaching HR for Clarification
In most cases, once the BGV is unsatisfactory, there are very few chances for reconsideration. However, one can approach HR and ask for clarification, as there could be a mistake, such as errors in terms or names that might have led to the offer being issued incorrectly. HR departments typically handle these processes in high volumes and have robust systems in place, minimizing the likelihood of errors in cases where offers are withdrawn due to negative BGV reports.
Possibility of Reconsideration
While such occurrences are rare, it is worth verifying. One can make an appeal, acknowledging the possibility of a mistake. It is essentially a trial, and the company may or may not oblige, considering it as 'confidential' and 'closed'.

Yes, all that is said above. Probably, all IT companies conduct Background Verification (BGV) through third-party agencies. Sometimes, there could be inaccuracies. However, you could verify with the HR department concerned why the offer was declined, possibly due to a background verification failure.
Common Reasons for Verification Failures
Common reasons for verification failures include:
1. Years of experience
2. Salary
3. Designation
4. Roles and Responsibilities
and other factors.

I hope you are doing great. Your question is very valid. The answer to it is as follows: initiate a conversation with the HR Department's designated person regarding the issue. If you discover that the information provided by you is incorrect, inquire about the procedure for rectifying it. If the information is accurate, you may correct it with management approval. The course of action depends on the nature of the discrepancy, whether it pertains to your employment, education, criminal record, passport, PAN card, etc.
Once you determine the specific area of the discrepancy, please update us here. With clarity on the issue, we will be able to assist you more effectively.
All the best!

The comments given by our fellow members are precise, and you should inform your brother to speak with the HR team at TCS. A requisition email followed up by a personal visit should work.
However, my comments come from a different point of view. You have mentioned that your brother received an offer, and the joining date was also specified. If your brother is currently employed elsewhere, was that company aware that he is looking for a change? Many employers (HR teams) who do not want their current employees to leave may provide less favorable comments in response to verification emails. This could potentially lead the new company to reconsider the offer.
Considering your brother as a fresher, if he was hired directly from a campus, there would likely be minimal background verification regarding his credentials. Off-campus hires do undergo background checks, as mentioned by others. I suggest asking your brother to verify the information provided to TCS. Also, errors in the background verification process, especially for companies operating at a CMMI level, are less than 0.10%.
Please let me know if you need further assistance or clarification.

While one can appreciate Mr. Mahesh Nair's response, his sweeping remark that what the fellow HR Member/Professionals say is 'void' is not condoned. I, as a professional, stoutly protest this, even if it is a mistake. It would have been nice for him to have made his point and also gone through the query. (The candidate in question is a fresher, so experience and a reference from the HR of the earlier company doesn't arise at all.)
While companies claim to have attained CMM Level 5 and use it for publicity, they could have multiple centers/branches and various practices. It could have been on the basis of a center or practice. In this case, the candidate is a fresher, and the company in question is TCS. (Some centers could be assessed at Level 5 on CMM, hence it would be interesting to see if the candidate has a rejection on BGV from the assessed Level 5 on CMM.)
TCS News & Events: Press Release: TCS sets new benchmark in Quality; First software firm to be assessed at Level 5 enterprise-wide in software services and development
Rectification and Redressal
Coming to the aspect of rectification or seeking redressal/addressing the issue, it costs nothing, even if it should mean a rejection. All of us know that there are a lot of professionals who would find it difficult to admit they made a mistake. Who knows, it might cost them their job, so why would they put their neck on the noose? It's easier, therefore, to say, "We found there is nothing incorrect in the BGV, and so we reject."
A trial has to be made irrespective of the result.

Dear All HR fraternity, I appreciate your time and energy in guiding the boy for a real-time solution. I advise the boy to directly check with HR - TCS. Though there are little and meager chances for reconsideration for some time, assuming that BGV is correct, it is better to try. This will be useful for his future career prospects. Be careful while providing BGV details to any employer.
Hope all are with me on this matter.

The Right to Know About BGV Results
All well said. Don't you think it's the right of the candidate to know what went wrong with the BGV? I don't understand what is so confidential about this. To all HR professionals reading this, please give a chance to someone who is desperately requesting to know the reason for a negative BGV. You may be losing a valuable candidate!!!
Goodbye

I am having the same issue. I have 10 years of experience in the IT field. Two weeks ago, I cleared technical, MR, and HR interviews at TCS. The HR representative told me that after background verification, the offer letter would be released.
When I completed my HR interview, a third-party verification team went to my previous employer to verify my details. They informed me about the verification. Since then, I have not received any communication from TCS. I called the Delivery Head from TCS, who interviewed me for the MR position, to ask about the status. He told me he would check with HR and confirm. Later, he called me back and informed me that there was an issue with the BGC verification, which is why the process has not progressed.
My experience is with only two employers. The verification was done directly with my previous employer, and they provided the verification company details. It is a small company. I am unsure whether they verified my current company or not.
In the TCS portal, they have not updated this reason. I have sent an email to TCS HR to ask for the status. I have provided documents, and my experience details are 100% true. I am totally depressed and disappointed. I want to know the exact reason for this. Is somebody deliberately interfering with my future? Should I send an email to the third-party team regarding this? I have obtained the Head of the verification team's email ID from their website. How can I handle this? Please suggest.

It is very unfortunate to learn your story. With due respect to your past employers and TCS, I wish to make the following suggestions:
1. Go through your resume that you submitted in the interview.
2. Go through the details of the resume minutely in all areas.
3. Review all the documents and records that are sent as supportive or credentials.
4. Introspect all the key or critical areas of the relationship in the past employment history.
5. Recall if there is an element of mistrust or misrepresentation of the data involving financial/cash dealings in customer management.
6. Last but not least, check out yourself if—in the past—you are a party or have connived with someone for any activity that is detrimental to company interests like pilferage, property theft, data theft, or sabotage.
Please be assured that no company worth its salt at any level will do any damage to the candidature of individuals, especially young, qualified, and honest, and refuse to recruit them when the background check comes out with a clean chit. No HR manager should lose a right candidate as much as not to take the wrong candidate.
All the best.
