Hi
My suggestion to counsel them regularly and undertake some training programs occasionally. Teach them on behavioral aspects, responsibility towards life and employment, etc. Understand their background, family, which influence their behavior. I agree with Neha's views.

Hi Pavadia,
It is important to maintain discipline in work place be it is office boy or other staffs, since you are managing the office boys i suggest you to be strict with them. The more you ignore their misbehavior the worst things will get, so act before it’s too late. You could have a one on one and give them a serious warning.....if repeated give in on papers and if things are still not under control fire one or two of them (only if its necessary)....that should set it right.

I agree with Dixita..... You did mention that they have over 8 years of exp, if you replace them with out sourced staffs you'll have a better work force at a much lesser cost. You end up doing some cost cutting as well :)

Thanks alot for all your feedback and valuable time.
I will surely treat them as my colleagues and not office boys.
I am independent HR in a pvt. ltd. buying house.
The management is quite self centered and don't think much about their Employees or their social cicle.

Dear Pavadia,

This attitude of your Support Staff is basically termed as Generalising Attitude. They never want to be treated as office boys. Rather they want to be a part of everybody "you." So, take it a presidential office or a labour office you find the same attitudes and this is in no way new with any other companies. But, it is you who can change this by recognising their smallest of the smallest achievement, say it Punctuality, Office Administration etc.,. Also, as the years pass on their stagnation brings in this attitude. So, try to fetch some budget from your management and utilise for to get certified on Computer Literacy. Later on you can their talent in time office or basic voucher enteries. This scene of rotation or carrer upgradation will bring in competitiveness within themselves. Finally they will forget their non co-operative attitude and start working for you as well as for themselves.

This might not fully help you. Yes, to some extent it might. Try it out.

Dear Friend,
This is a very common problem faced by many people in corporates...
But the solution is not as simple as we think.
I belive a person can do much better work by respect towards his manager but not with the fear.
so be kind with them listen to them first...... if they have any problem.....you ask them only for the solution tooooo and follow them if they are correct.
Before all these things first aske you superiors to conduct a meeting and instruct the office boys that you are their boss and any decision/issues they have to be informed to you first.

Hello!
Pavadia should know that the management wanted him to handle the office boys may be after realizing there is a perceived disorder or some problem with their attitude.

He must study the mood of the management and also the personal profiles of the office boys.
Manaement may a have developed a bit leniency towards the office boys because now a days finding people to work as office boys is very difficult, difficult than finding a management trainee, but without office boys it is difficult to manage the office.

On the other hand the office boys wll take everything casually and every one lightly because nothing is going to fall either good or bad if they are very serious at work and dealing with the staff. They think that they have to rot at the bottom because they are not having many avenues for promotion and they have to do the same thing either in the present company or else where for the same remumeration. Therefore, they will develop this sort of attitude.
Moreover, the some from staff themselves appease the office boys to get their odd jobs done and also to ventilate their anger, ill feelings and envy when ever they are faced with difficulty in getting their work done,or promotion is not given or the boss is assigning heavy work to them in comparison to their other colleagues. Sometimes friction among the executives will encourage the office boys carry tales one aginst the other. And they develop carelessness. This will encourage the substaff to play foul and do what ever they feel like doing.

As a HR saddled with such task one has to look into these aspects and curtail such things in th office.

Moreover, he must also take into confidence the management and suggest a policy wherein the office boys cadre also will be given oppportunity to move up the ladder of employment.
He must also chalk out a programme for the office boys to develop their skills and to become eligible for a better job in the same organization and if possible, must organize training programme for them if their number is such where batches can be formed.

Hi
I agree with the views of other colleagues. I can quite understand that you are feeling a little dissatisfied over the fact that you have to manage office boys. I would suggest that begin with a positive note. They have ben in teh system for long and surely have adequate knowledge about the compnay its people. Befreind them and encourage them to talk, it will help you as HT professional.
They are like teh way you feel, because they have remained in teh same job and position for long. It would be worthwhile to explore what else can they do. You can gove them additional/ different job responsibilities. If the experiment succeeds it will be a feather in your cap. A;; I acm adise you that as Hr professional, be ready for challemges and be innovative. Probably you have not worked in IR environment.

Dear Pavida,
beleive me it is too early for you to judge them, may be staff members do not want you to bring those people in your confidence. these office boys will be gr8 help to you as they can share all inwards things to you and the management. SEEK their confidence with proper guidance (do not show ur superiorness) for disclipline. Give respect take respect principle and beware of office staff (ur collegues).
