Could anyone please help me by providing some ideas on what topics should be covered in HR for a manufacturing unit if the company wants a complete solution to all its day-to-day HR practices? I am in the field of marketing, but as I have completed my MBA in HR and Marketing (Batch 2010-12), I have been tasked with creating an outline and, ultimately, a PowerPoint presentation on the topics that should be covered for a manufacturing concern related to Human Resources.
I would appreciate any assistance on this matter. Please suggest any ideas or provide me with a list of topics on HR for a large manufacturing firm.
Thank you,
SMITA

Ramesh has given you some sound tips. Hence, let me ask you a few questions. These questions may help other bloggers to provide complete information before raising a question, to help experts give precise advice.
- Who has asked you to give a presentation?
- How large is the company that needs these services?
From United Kingdom

For better advice, can you clarify whether all you have to do is give a simple academic presentation only, or if you have to study the unit and suggest solutions? If it is a simple academic presentation, then the suggestion given by Mr. Ramesh in post #2 above will suffice. If it is not, then you have to provide further details.

Hello, Sir, I appreciate your suggestion. I am an MBA of the 2010-12 batch, and I have been placed in a software company with the designation of Executive - Marketing. However, as I have studied both HR and Marketing during my MBA, my roles sometimes extend into the HR field.
During my MBA in HR, I covered subjects such as HRP, HRD, Industrial Relations (IR), and Cross-Cultural & Global HRM (CCGH). Since the company does not have international operations, I believe CCGH may not be applicable, and the company may not need software for handling grievances and complaints from its Trade Union. Therefore, IR may not be relevant, in my opinion.
Please provide me with necessary suggestions and guidance on this matter.
Thank you,
Smita

Dear Sir,
I have gone through all your points. The company to which we are going to provide a complete HR solution has no international operations.
One other thing, you have mentioned that Industrial Relations will be covered. In IR, the role of Trade Union is an important aspect. Will their management want to make software regarding their Trade Union?
Will IR come under the solution we want to provide?
Again, please provide me with necessary subtopics under each main topic you have described in your reply.
Like HRP, Recruitment & Selection, Training & Development, Performance Appraisal & Rewards, Salary wage admin, Employee Welfare Admin, Employee Engagement Activities, Overall Housekeeping of the plant, Contractual Manpower Management, Security Admin, Statutory Provision under different Labour Laws, etc.
And what topics will come under Company Guest House/Pantry/Canteen Admin?
Please provide me with necessary subtopics for all the above I mentioned. I think you have worked in a plant. I have only studied theoretical aspects of HRP, HRD, and IR.
Other topics you have described like Employee engagement activities, Security admin, Overall housekeeping, Pantry/Canteen admin, etc., those were not in my syllabi.
Our main purpose is to provide that company a complete HR Software solution. So for that primarily, we have to make an outline first, which topics can come with respect to a Manufacturing Unit that has only national operations.
Our company converts concepts into software solutions.
For that, I first need a good sound outline consisting not only of the main points but also the subtopics under those.
Please review this query once more and what answers you have given me previously if any other main process will be covered within that or only subtopics will be covered under each main process.
I found your suggestion trustworthy. Please once more review my query and please reply.
Thanks for helping me out!

Smita

I am a fresher in my company and do not have much knowledge. I am working in the field of marketing, but as I have done dual specialization in HR & Marketing, I sometimes have to move from my core field to the HR field. In HR, during my MBA, I have studied HRP, HRD, IR, and CCGH (Cross-Cultural & Global HRM).
Hope I will get a concrete answer to my query on "HR Topics for a Manufacturing Firm."
Thanks,
SMITA

Dear Smita, I mentioned Industrial Relations as an important part of the HR role. Its scope has a broader meaning in the current scenario. It not only deals with the Trade Unions but as HR professionals, we have to spend a lot of time creating and maintaining good industrial relations. This means we need regular interaction with employees to understand their concerns so that we may devise proactive policies for improvement. We are change agents between Management and the employees. Based on our fact-based suggestions, the management acts.
Further, you may categorize the topics as under:
HR
Manpower Planning and Forecasting
You see your current manpower/business plan, future requirements, and demand and supply issues.
Recruitment and Selection
Data bank, manpower consultants, school and colleges for placements, receiving and reviewing job applications, planning for interviews, calling and shortlisting candidates, preparing job offers, appointment letters, and joining formalities.
Training and Development
Induction training for the new incumbent.
Regular Training (identification of training needs, preparing training calendars, conducting training programs, evaluating the feedback for further improvements).
Performance Management
Having regular interaction with the HODs for periodic review of the performance of the employees, rewards, and letters.
Employee Engagement Activities; to get optimum output and for the satisfaction of the manpower.
Rewards and Recognition
Administration
Company canteen, pantry, security, stationery, vehicles, computers and printers, fax machines, telephones and mobiles, CCTV cameras, furniture and fixtures, salary and wages, maintaining personal records, liaison with Labour Dept., Factories Dept., PF Dept., ESIC Dept., and other related departments, Time Office administration, maintaining overall housekeeping of the plant, managing contractual manpower, complying with statutory provisions under different Labour Laws, overtime, ex-gratia, etc.
Welfare Measures
In addition to the statutory provisions, professional companies stress the welfare of the employees, i.e.
- Loans and advances
- Conveyance facilities
- Accommodation arrangements
- Taking care of the families
- Schooling of the children of the employees
- Cultural activities
- Tours and travels
- Free medical check-up camps
- Outside training of the employees
Industrial Relations: As already mentioned.
I may have missed some important points, but the above is the broad categorization of the processes.
