hi prachi,
while i agree with almost everybody here.. on one thing.. that this guy is really nutty and typical attitude, but at the same time i also understand your position as HR...
so the best thing according to me cud be..

talk to his wife.. try and make her understand that he (the director) is a very important part of the organization and so is she.. (since she is her wife)... try to put ur point to her... tell her wat and how wud have she reacted if she were in ur position... try to convince her so that she, in turn convince her husband..

and now since birthday has gone, u can always talk to the management and get her a nice gift...

you can convince ur management that since she is wife of an important person, who feels neglected, the gift can serve as a healing purpose...

and the xpenses cud go under the head business development or employee retention...

hope my suggestion is not too weird..

Hi Prachi,
Even I don't think so your 'Director' has got the right emotional intellegence to understand such simple logics in organization. This is a very simple concept to understand. Anyway not sure of such 'weird' behaviour.
But I totally disagree to certain comments that 'husband and wife' cannot work in the same organization. What's harm in that? Any team members is evaluated by his/her roles and responsibilities and deliverables. Then why this thought?

Yes Prachi,
what Ravi has said was right. Terminating those employees is not the solution for this, the policies of the company have to be strong. Also as rightly said by Ravi, you should show this as a joint decision. Because, there is something called a consumer forum where the employees can pull the company into legal issues. Hope you got the point.

I would like to add u that ..yes wat everything gng with u is wrong but I think ur working in non-MNC company and in such companies ...rules n policies are change for person to person..
I think u have to proceed on this direction like u can do something like which will hide ur mistake[from mgmt's view as her B'day u didnt celebrated in that way ]..n accept that mistake..bcz in Non-MNC's it is normal thing upper level ppl think that they can make n break the rules according to their own way ..n its gng bcz ...1st rule of any job is ..
Everything will be fine n good when ur boss will be happy..
Everything is fair in JOB when ur boss is with u ..8)
SO keep ur boss[mgmt] with u:shock:
N take this thing lightly n solve it:p

What busines you company is involved..is it call center or faishon industry ??
More so I feel that person is taking shadow of celebration or just cracking a prank against you... no body will do such thing at his level...
any ways check your credintials in the org as well....
If you find yourself clean then dont work in such kind of org...you better quit..your intellect & labour should be used in productive organization..

Most of the time HR is on defensive side as if they are trying to please other... its not a matter of b'day but its a matter of policy & pocess also equality & pairity among employees at various levels....
Dont feel bad about it see how best you can put acrosss your point and stand by with conviction...at least you will not repent later...

please discuss this with your management and take the decision accordingly. In the meanwhile u can also explain well about the policy since he is wkg for the past 7 yrs as he knows the policy very well. Even then if he would like to leave the organisation that's upto him.

let me just throw some points here .... The Director sure has some other strategy here or he is out of his minds. try figuring out wt exactly is happening as its rightly mentioned he has some issues concerning him which he is not making it obvious...... all i can say is if efforts are made to retain him its just gonna be like a cat on the wall.... so better throw this cat n get another cat in

Yes, sometime employees act more emotional than rational at senior levels too.
Your directed is feeling humilated because his wife was not treated as per his expectations.
You got to suugest that he can organize birthday party for the wife outside, somewhere and invite all the staff memebrs, and HR will remburse the Bill in the form of some token or bonus,You cannot afford to loose a high calibre person for a very trivial issue, and should convince him and let him feel good.
One more thing, his wife is his weakness,. You better try to convince her, since she is also working in your company, she can better influence his decision and change his mindset.

Dear Prachi,
First try to convince him preferably with a senior HR Member about the Policy and how it is going to affect the employees in general
Secondly you can think of going to his residence. Things are generally on a personal level at home. From what I can see he has been instigated by his wife.
Still no outcome he does not deserve to be in this position. Its better he goes.
By the way what's the age difference between the two - I feel this is instigated by his wife (I presume there must be a big age difference)
In no way budge to his demand - Professional Ethics you know.
You may then have two options - Fight or Fly.
