I am a Welfare Officer in the reputed Tata Group manufacturing unit in West Bengal for the last 4 years. As per welfare rules in West Bengal, the service condition of a Welfare Officer is clearly mentioned, i.e., 'The chief welfare officer or the welfare officer, where there is only one, shall be given the same status as is enjoyed by the other departmental heads in the factory, and he shall work directly under the control of the same executive of the factory under whom the other departmental heads work.'

I am the only welfare officer in this unit.

During the interview board, I was asked to explain the duties and service conditions of a welfare officer; I replied with the rule and then jokingly added, "Sir, this is basically an ornamental post, the industry does not follow." The top boss intervened and said, 'Remember, this is the Tata Group, here everything is followed as per the rule.'

After joining the company, the behavior of my colleagues was different, and it does not reflect that I am receiving the same conditions as mentioned in the rules.

After a year of observation, when I asked my boss, he replied, "Basically, it is not a prestigious post, it is a clerical post." However, for other minor violations of the rules (such as the absence of a spittoon or not displaying abstracts on all notice boards in the local language, etc.), it has a high impact on the Performance Management System (PMS) and is directly reported to the MD level.

The internal audit team also does not seem to be concerned about my service conditions.

What should I do? Please help.

I do not want to create any negative impact in my company.

Remember, never be flippant in any interview. Make your impact as a welfare officer in subtle ways. Within the planned budget and rules, try to secure all facilities for the laborers. Let your work speak for itself and help the bosses understand the value of your contributions.
