Hello Garima,
Glad that you have learnt the lesson--but a word of caution: take it in a positive way rather than with a feeling of being cheated/taken-for-a-ride [I know it's tough, but that's a much better way]. It's only then that the lesson you learnt will stand by you later--part of the experience in life/career.

A comment to your response["........the company is a very reputed one and previously I was working with a small firm so I was tempted........."] to Anil's remarks. Pl note that the size of the company doesn't really matter in such matters/cases. After all they too are staffed by 'human beings' & human nature being what it is, such situations can occur irrespective of the size/stature of the organization. Just use the reSearch feature at the top of this page & you will see how many threads have been posted reg such issues/situations--some with the company names mentioned.
Another possibility--maybe the consultancy HR person COULDN'T[or rather DIDN'T want to] see the disappointment on your face by giving the 'bad news'? I have seen this happen quite often--just as we know on 'how' to give the good news, it's also important to learn on 'how' to give/break the 'bad' news to someone--else maybe you could find YOURSELF in that HR person's place later in your career.

All the Best.

TS

Hi Garima,

I am totally agree with above suggestions, and would advice you to understand "time value", Wasting a single hour in your career may hamper your success in life, Hence please try to seek other opportunity and moreover if you have caliber and potential you would get better chance to work for more reputed company.

Normally Companies do not opt such practice what is been stated , Since this adversely affect their prestige and market value, there must be some genuine reason to put you on hold, Tommorow or later in your career you might get a bigger opportunity in same company, at that moment would you really feel comfortable to work with those people against whom you made complain, Because every employee of the company is bound to work as per company norms, so you really don't
know about the actual reason for delaying your appointment.

I would suggest you to have positive attitude and treat "NO" as "NEXT OPPOTUNITY", move further in your life and climb success steps of ladder.

Dear Ms. Garima,
Its not about the company you want to complaint, its about the management or those who are operating it. To be honest, NO COMPANY IN THIS WORLD IS BAD because its has NO LIFE but, its all about those WHO PUT LIFE IN IT so called "MANAGEMENT" or whomsoever held responsible for making employees complaint about xyz issues.
Its not the company to be corrected but the SYSTEMS and PROCEDURES in place/practice
With profound regards
