Hi, Currently, I am working as a Tech Lead in one of the reputed MNCs. My onboarding happened during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. At the time of joining, I provided documents that were available via email even before joining (I had a 3-month notice period from my previous employer). The Background Verification (BGV) process had commenced, but one of my previous companies (the second last one) had shut down, and I don't have any documents from that company as it was a project for a friend that didn't work out.

Around 10-15 days after onboarding, the company asked me for those documents. I informed them that I didn't have any documentation from the shut-down company.

Despite repeated pressure from them, I explained that I would try to obtain the document. After a month had passed, I reached out to HR and asked for clarification on why the documentation wasn't requested before my joining. I also mentioned that if the situation was problematic, they could cancel my joining. The HR representative responded that they would look into it and get back to me. Later, they changed my status from amber to green and mentioned that the document was needed for client BGV.

Now, after completing a year and a half, I am considering leaving the company. Will this BGV status pose any issues for a smooth transition when I resign?

Based on the given information, if BVG came back as Green, then there will be no problem with your relieving at all. Normally, BVG is used as a reference point to check the credentials of an employee, and that process typically ends with the current employer.

However, the next employer will conduct an independent BVG once again. Therefore, try to obtain the document from your past employer, or else modify your resume and include a remark stating, "No Certificates available due to company lock." When filling out employment forms for future positions, make sure to mention such a remark. By declaring this fact at the very initial stage, you can avoid any potential challenges.

Thank you for your help. However, it is not marked as 'Green'; instead, it is marked as 'Green from Amber,' which means 'Documents are yet to be received,' according to a Google search. Will they provide me with the required documents, like the experience/relieving letter, at the time of separation? Google suggests that all documents should be gathered before joining, and if not, how did they approve me to work? Employment should have been terminated at that point. As I mentioned in the email, 'I don't have any document except the experience letter, which is already shared. Please provide your decision on it.' They didn't reply to this, and tasks were assigned to me by the manager.

Concerns About Background Verification and Employment Status

I think your company might be a body shopper. It appears, from what you have posted, that you are supposed to be put on a new assignment with a client who is asking for those documents to be verified before you are allowed to work for them.

In view of the above, your employer is asking for the missing document. If you don't provide it, they may need to bench you again until a different client is willing to take you in despite the document gap. I do not know the details of the company, so I can't comment on the impact of this. However, it is possible they may terminate you on some grounds if they can't place you soon.

If the company was of a friend, get a complete set of documents from them and use them for the current and future Background Verifications (BVGs).
