What makes you think there is bullying in your workplace?

If there is bullying, what type of activity is being done or what bullying are you facing? You need to describe your problem for members to advise.

As with any other kind of problem, you need to understand it deeply to be able to deal with it. But most importantly, know that this too shall pass.

Read up on this subject - start here: Workplace bullying is a persistent pattern of mistreatment from others in the workplace that causes either physical or emotional harm. It can include tactics such as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse, and humiliation. This type of workplace aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical school bully, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and society. In the majority of cases, bullying in the workplace is reported as having been by someone who has authority over their victim.

Workplace bullies are very common, particularly in large workplaces, mostly to attract attention and to show 'who the real boss is'. It is a threat to the formal authority and power relationship in a work situation. Ignoring it would mean succumbing to it and would be irretrievable. There are various methods of dealing with it, but one method that could be considered is to confront the bully and make it known 'that this is not acceptable' at the first instance itself. When and how to react to it could be chosen later, but misbehavior has to be countered in the first instance itself as unacceptable. It is necessary to show that as management, you are not intimidated or feel threatened by such people. Otherwise, more such bullies would be born.

One thing needs to be understood very clearly: bullies are the creation of weak management, a symptom of feebleness, and the feeling of helplessness among management. It is seen that when actions like suspension/charge sheet are taken, many such bullies crumble down and seek pardon.

Dear Anaszina,

A place where a good number of people from different backgrounds (caste, creed, color, territory, and language) assemble at one point in time may be affected or tainted, such as our workplace. Several laws, rules, policing, and acts have been enacted to maintain discipline in the workplace.

Bullying in the workplace is nothing but a nuisance – the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively dominate others by employees. This behavior is often repeated and habitual among employees. The above is considered misconduct and must be stopped immediately before it spreads and becomes vicious.

In this particular case, the management must issue a circular immediately stating that anybody found involved in bullying in the workplace will be dealt with severely. Issue a show cause or warning letter.

Thank you.
