Dear Swati, In my opinion HR is like a double edged sword, one has to know when to be rude and when to be sweet. So HR has to be sweet or sour depends on the situation.

I agree with VISHAL. For HR personnel, Situational Management as a rude person and sweet person, depending on the situation, is a must to handle different types of people in the industry as a coordinator.

In my opinion, HR's name itself suggests "human resources," which need to be ably utilized. HR should be more focused on achieving the targets of an organization on schedule, keeping the employees' spirits high. Sometimes, HR needs to bend the rules and act as a bridge between workers and management. Any issues need to be dealt with logically, keeping the values of relationships in mind.

Politeness and Firmness in HR Executives
Actually, if we talk specifically about HR executives, they should be polite. However, HR rules should also be presented in a rigid and firm manner to ensure that every employee and department follows these policies in a disciplined way. HR executives should maintain a polite demeanor.

I am not sure what exactly Swati has in mind when she raised this question. The word 'rude' has many synonyms; all of these mean the same thing - "disrespectful behavior." Rudeness need not necessarily be verbal; at times, non-verbal expressions can be more annoying and highly detestable. In general, in our interpersonal transactions, we have to be courteous and considerate. In the process of managing people, rudeness is to be avoided even in provoking situations. An HR manager, charged with the inalienable responsibility of inculcating the sense of belongingness in the entire human resource of the organization, has to be more cautious in such situations to avoid unnecessary escalation of the problems faced. He should be conscious of the fact that anyone who fails to be a part of a solution becomes automatically a party to the problem. While approaching any problem relating to people, he should not lose sight of the principles of "sama - dhana - beda - dandam" and apply them effectively in their orderly sequence.

As rightly observed by many members, HR is people-oriented. All the other discipline people are HR's customers. To exhibit a behavior of rudeness to the customers is certainly an act of effrontery and disgrace. In certain cases, where the organization rules call for it, HR can afford to be strict but not rude at any time.

The Importance of Professionalism in HR
HR personnel must never be rude. Certainly, they must not behave like a joker to please the employees, but they should never be rude. Rudeness shows inefficiency in HR, similar to a rude school teacher. If an HR professional is rude, the organization should dismiss them. Otherwise, who will hold them accountable? They could behave like a dictator without any consequences. The practice of teachers using physical punishment on children in the name of teaching morality is no longer valid.

Being rude will never help anyone in any business, including running your family, friends, or relationships. Being strict when needed does not necessarily mean being rude. Moreover, I personally feel HR does not only mean Human Resource but Human Relations as well, and every relationship has different traits, moods, and behaviors. HR personnel should behave according to the situation. But being rude, I wonder if it ever works?

The Role of HR in Building Confidence
HR should always create confidence among employees and be approachable, which will help us detect future problems and nip them in the bud. Being rude may lead to a false sense of discipline that is not beneficial for the organization.

Now, that's a loaded question, like, "Have you stopped beating your wife?" If you say, "Yes," you agree that you beat her earlier, and if you say, "No," it means you are continuing to be evil.

HR is a person who leads, manages, motivates, and guides the human resources, i.e., the employees from white-collared to blue-collared workers. They should coordinate and have patience to solve any crises; hence, they can't be rude.

It is strange that such a question has invoked a huge response. Firstly, the question is based on a personal experience with absolutely no background explained; moreover, nobody even questioned it. It seems one person had an unpleasant experience with an HR executive and raised it in this forum along with a poll on the same. Ms. Swati, are you planning to show the poll results and the inputs to the HR executive and tell him/her that their behavior has been judged RUDE.

Ms. Swati, the first and most important qualities that qualify a person as HR are responsiveness and humanity. Rudeness may be necessary when policies are not met by an individual, but it is important to remember that HR is not a cool or leisure job; it is the most responsible job. HR serves as an interface between employees and management. The employees are the customers of HR, so if those customers are not satisfied, then there is no point in having an HR.

The Role of HR in the Workplace
HR has to be approachable. I think any employee should feel comfortable coming to HR and sharing any obstacles that are affecting their productivity.
HR has to be friendly but not a friend.
HR has to be firm, and if people do not know the difference between being firm and being rude, then they can take their call.

Hi Swathi, hope you are doing well! Good question, Swathi. Even I used to have this question in the early days. In my experience, I have faced situations where my pioneers and seniors used to advise me not to be too kind to people. I wondered why we can't be kind, why we should be rude or carry serious faces, even though we can manage the situation. Later, my experience taught me many things, and I can now say that yes, we can be rude at times, but only "once in a blue moon."
Case 1:
When interviewing hundreds of candidates daily, you might encounter people with silly questions or those whose questions answer themselves. Some may just want to interact and may be irritating. In such situations, try to be as patient as possible. As an HR professional, the primary quality is humanity, as the name HR itself suggests. We are here to provide the best services to the company and handle situations, even in the worst cases. Make every effort to provide the best answers while maintaining your composure.
Case 2:
Sometimes, you may encounter people with a caring attitude but respond rudely due to their indifferent body language. In such cases, provide good answers but do not forget to smile. However, there are situations that may seem out of control, and despite our efforts, we may feel impatient. In such instances, it is acceptable to be rude.
It is essential to remember that situations vary from person to person. In most cases, we approach individuals based on our perceptions.
I have shared this information based on my experience. Please reach out if you need any clarification on this.
