Dear Laxman,

HR Generalists typically operate at the executive level in the retail industry as Store HR, in service industries, hospitality, etc. Core HR is more prevalent in the manufacturing industry. Core HR involves individual responsibilities in Industrial Relations (IR), Employee Relations (ER), HR Administration, and Training and Development.

Hi,

In my view, HR has various areas like Recruitment, Training, Competency Assessment, etc. The HR generalist is involved in all the activities to some extent, and in a specialist role, an HR person is involved in a specific field.

In the IT Industry:

Generalist and Core HR are more or less similar. In partnership with HR specialists (Recruitment/Training/Compensation & Benefits), Generalists must ensure that all HR services are delivered. There are high possibilities of heading the HR function for an organization.

Specialists primarily focus on Recruitment/Training/Compensation & Benefits where they will have specialized knowledge. They will be highly focused on their specific function, and there is less possibility of them heading the HR function of an organization.

KK

Hi,

HR Generalist includes HR roles and also some administrative activities, such as processing work and arranging facilities.

Core HR solely focuses on HR functions; it revolves around policy-making and understanding employees.

Are we just discussing based on common sense or theoretical and practical knowledge? Both Core HR and HR Generalist are very vague terminologies, and each person will have a different idea of these terms. Again, I find some data in some of the earlier posts.

Generalist HR: As it is very much clear from the word "generalist," the person with a generalist HR profile has to oversee the entire domain of HR, from Manpower Planning to Employee Separation & Exit Interview. This includes functions such as Manpower Planning, Recruitment, Selection, Induction, Performance Management, Time Office Management, Compensation Planning, Grievance Handling, Employee Relations & Statutory compliances. It means the person in a generalist profile may lead the apex position of the Human Resources Department.

Specialist HR: As it is very much clear from the term "specialist HR," the person with a specialist HR profile needs to focus on a specific domain of HR, such as Manpower Planning, Recruitment, Selection, Induction, Performance Management, Time Office Management, Compensation Planning, Grievance Handling, Employee Relations & Statutory compliances. It means the specialist may be the Cell Head of their specific domain.

Hi Laxman,

An HR Generalist's role includes all general HR activities such as payroll, compensation, and benefits. The person in this role is not specialized in any particular vertical but oversees HR in a general capacity, which may also involve administrative tasks. On the other hand, Core HR focuses solely on HR functions without incorporating other responsibilities and specializes in specific HR activities.
