In my view, HR has various areas like Recruitment, Training, Competency Assessment, etc. The HR generalist is involved in all the activities to some extent, and in a specialist role, an HR person is involved in a specific field.

In the IT Industry:
Generalist and Core HR are more or less similar. In partnership with HR specialists (Recruitment/Training/Compensation & Benefits), Generalists must ensure that all HR services are delivered. There are high possibilities of heading the HR function for an organization.
Specialists primarily focus on Recruitment/Training/Compensation & Benefits where they will have specialized knowledge. They will be highly focused on their specific function, and there is less possibility of them heading the HR function of an organization.

This includes functions such as Manpower Planning, Recruitment, Selection, Induction, Performance Management, Time Office Management, Compensation Planning, Grievance Handling, Employee Relations & Statutory compliances. It means the person in a generalist profile may lead the apex position of the Human Resources Department.
