Hi, can you please guide me on whether the employee needs to be penalized for her lateness due to a car accident, given that she has submitted a police report to the HR department? Our working hours start at 9 am and end at 6 pm. However, she arrived at the office at 10:30 am and explained that she was delayed due to a car accident earlier that morning. Should she not be required to make up the 1.5 hours of work since she promptly submitted the police report?

Dear Deserine,
Greetings!
If someone has had an accident and you need to make up for the 1.5 hours lost, that's truly surprising. If you believe the person who was in the accident, it would be appropriate to offer them time off for at least a couple of hours so they can rest and return to work with optimal productivity. Remember, productivity is more important than the number of hours worked.

I also admit with the above. But we also should check weather the particular employee is a SHARP 6 PM Punch out guy. Toby Jose HR

Hi,
It is a genuine case. She was in an accident. In this situation, we cannot discuss working hours.
Sometimes, we can allow flexible hours or give your staff permission for one or two hours during the month. After that, we can deduct from their salary.

Making the employee compensate for that one and a half hours will surely demoralize and demotivate not only this employee but also a lot of other individuals who form an opinion based on observing their surroundings.

Dear,
Very funny!
Does your company or HR team have any humanity left?
You do not have faith in your employees. Is an accident a daily routine?
I would suggest hiring robots as employees, especially in the HR department because they do not have emotions.
Sorry if my reply is hard-hitting, but you asked for it.

HR is human resource management, not Hitler resource management. Respect humanity first. If you make employees comfortable, they will be self-motivated to work, not required to monitor the number of hours spent.

Thank you for all comments, even the bad ones. Thank you! Sorry for any of my stupid questions posted. Actually, I am not fully in the HR field. I am very new as an Admin cum HR Assistant in the company. Currently, my HOD has resigned, and I am the only staff member left in the HR and Admin Department now. Thus, I am feeling stuck. I am not a professional in HR. Now, I understand that we need to be humane in treating cases by considering the total output of work, instead of just following the rules and regulations.
I am okay with all the hard-hitting feedback, but anyway, thank you all for guiding me. I have learned a lot. Thank you!

Accepting the mistake is a great sign of improvement. One more important thing about you is that you have asked for opinions in a forum instead of making the decision alone. This shows that you have good learning skills and respect others' opinions. I hope you will excel as a good HR. All the best.
