Hi All,
I am working as an HR with one company. We work 6 days a week. Monday to Friday, we work full days, and on Saturday, it's a half-day. I want to know if somebody takes leave on Saturday, should I consider it a half-day leave or a full-day leave? Please give your suggestion.

A day on Saturday is a full day for working, half a day means 4 hours is equal to a full day's work. If you consider the working hours in a week to be 48 hours, you have to treat 48 working hours as a full week for this purpose.

Mr. Dewan,
Is this some kind of a joke!!! Who do you think you are to tell me whether I will give an answer to the post or not. Please try to maintain some decorum in the forum rather than making unnecessary comments which can very well spoil the sanctity of this venture. Please try to abstain from making loose remarks and better concentrate on the job at hand.
Don't get too emotional...........
Thanks

Dear Purnima,
The law requires the company to provide one day off per week, which is Sunday in your case. The company has the right to require employees to work the whole of Saturday. Retaining Saturday as a half working day is a concession on the part of the company. By working for just half a day, employees get paid for the full day. Hence, if the employee is absent for the half day, he should forfeit his leave for a full day.

Hi,
As per the Workmen's Compensation Act of 1948, the above directives are correct. However, if your company has a standing instruction in its HR policy stating that a leave on Saturday will be considered as a full-day leave, then you can treat leave on Saturday as a full leave. Also, you have to declare in your HR policy that there will be no half-day leave on Saturdays. If it is not mentioned, you can implement the same immediately to avoid any legal consequences.

Hi Purnima,
Does your company have fixed and defined working hours per day and its timings? If it is 8 hours fixed for all Monday to Friday, and 4 hours for Saturday, and the timings of each day are fixed, then Saturday leave is a half-day leave because it is defined as a half-day working as per your company's rules.
However, the Shop and Establishment Act (which may vary in different states) mostly states 48 hours of working in a week. So your organization may even have 8 hours working all 6 days. But before implementing such rules, they have to intimate the employee in advance as per the provisions of the ID Act.
I hope you have got the answer.
