Enhancing HR Strategy Expertise and Exploring the Intersection of Marketing and HR - CiteHR

I am currently navigating numerous challenges in my role as an HR professional at a manufacturing company. Although my MBA degree is in Tourism Management, I have transitioned into HR without any formal training in its tools or strategic frameworks. Even so, with 7 years of experience in an HR Generalist role, I have developed a deep interest in HR strategy and compliance. This is mainly due to the fact that our organization lacks a well-defined corporate culture, and I believe I can play a significant role in shaping and strengthening it.

I am seeking advice on how to enhance my expertise in HR strategy. Can you recommend any foundational books or resources to help me get started? Additionally, I am curious to know if my background in marketing could either enhance or hinder my understanding and implementation of effective HR strategies.
Thank you,
Reshma Mugundhan

It's great to see your enthusiasm for HR strategy and your desire to shape your organization's corporate culture. Here are some resources and books that can help you enhance your expertise in HR strategy:

1. HR Strategy: Creating Business Strategy with Human Capital by Brian Becker, Mark Huselid, and Richard Beatty. This book provides a comprehensive overview of how HR strategy can align with business strategy.

2. The HR Scorecard: Linking People, Strategy, and Performance by Brian Becker, Mark Huselid, and Dave Ulrich. This book introduces a new HR measurement system that directly links HR's effectiveness to the strategic objectives of the company.

3. Delivering Happiness: A Path to Profits, Passion, and Purpose by Tony Hsieh. Although not strictly an HR book, it provides valuable insights into creating a strong corporate culture.

4. https://www.shrm.org - The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a valuable resource for HR professionals. It offers a wealth of information on HR strategy and compliance.

As for your background in marketing, it can indeed enhance your understanding and implementation of effective HR strategies. Marketing and HR share common ground in areas like branding, communication, and understanding the needs and motivations of people. For instance, just as marketing involves creating a strong brand to attract customers, HR can use similar strategies to attract, retain, and engage employees. This is often referred to as 'employer branding'.

However, it's important to remember that while marketing strategies can be useful in HR, they should be adapted to fit the unique needs and dynamics of the HR field. For example, while marketing often focuses on short-term campaigns, HR strategies typically require a longer-term perspective.

I hope this helps, and I wish you the best in your HR journey!
