Tamil Nadu Government Paid Public Holiday on Poll Day

The Tamil Nadu Government declared a paid public holiday for employees on the day of the poll, 24-03-2014. However, our company is planning to designate this as a compensatory working day. Is compensatory leave allowed for a public holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881? Could any senior person please clarify this issue?

The Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881 has nothing to do with the election process or compensatory leave. Your company's gesture of providing compensatory time off is truly commendable. Please do not confuse the issue and instead, support the efforts of our democratic process by ensuring all your staff members vote for the good of our nation. Good luck.

Our company too has adjusted the leave. we are given leave on 24th April and kept working on 18th April. Is this justified.

Yes, the same is perfectly okay. Almost all organizations are doing the same. Even we are working on the last Saturday (which ideally is an off day). Let us all think from the organization's point of view. The operations should not hamper. Hope it helps.
