In general, what should be the basis for giving a salary increment to your staff? I am working on a project and I cannot understand our company's procedures. They gave an increment to one of my co-workers just because she goes home late every day. Is this a basis of effectiveness and efficiency in one's work?

Chrystelle,
Just ask your HR manager regarding this. According to the policy, there should be specific criteria for increasing salary, including applicable performance appraisals. Performance appraisal (PA) evaluates various aspects of an employee, such as:
1. How much knowledge they possess?
2. Their efficiency.
3. Their behavior towards other employees.
4. Punctuality.
5. Attendance, and so on.
Please inquire with your HR head about this. Salary increments are based on the above points, not simply on someone being late. Otherwise, the salary would increase every time. Before asking HR, evaluate how much you contribute to the organization.
