Understanding Minimum Wages in the Construction Industry
Employment in the construction of buildings and other structures is already included in the schedule of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, by various State Governments. Certainly, there would be a difference between the minimum wages and market wages. Given the spurt in the construction industry throughout the country and the dearth of experienced labor, the market wages would certainly be higher.
Therefore, it would be advisable for you to visit the websites of the State Governments of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, ascertain the minimum rates of wages fixed, and then decide on your own rates.

Thank you for your suggestion. The minimum wage is lower than the market rate. I would like to know what other industries are paying in each city. This information will help us plan our wages and benefits more effectively. Could you please inform me of the current wage for an 8-hour shift at your company?

Dear Praveen,
When you acknowledge the post of a senior, especially a person of the stature of a retired Additional Commissioner of Labour, you could have addressed him as "Dear Mr. Umakanthan" and not as "Dear Umakanthan." I request you to develop the ability to distinguish between when to be informal and when to be formal. You cannot be either everywhere, especially in a public forum like this!
Thanks,
Dinesh Divekar
