Hey All,
This happened with one of a close friend....recently...
He joined a company as Sr. Manager, which required to shift his base from Delhi to Chandigarh, and gladly he did so..
Few days(15 days to be precise) after he joined the company, he was asked to renegotiate the salary as the Management believed that the new project will not bring in many profits as they initially thought.
The proposal was that for next 6 months work on less salary than the one agreed mutually upon during finalization stage, and then if everything goes smoothly work on the salary as initially decided upon.
I would like to invite the opinions and insights of members, why do companies play with careers....How can they decide in just 15 days time that the new project will not bring in profits....
how can we all change such practices???
looking forward for responses....do pour in your views.....

Before starting a new project lots of researches, reviews, data collection detailed statistical analysis negotiation needs to be done, but in the real scenario at the real time of the project there can be doubt whether the expected revenue can be generated or not considering market conditions, orders given by clients, etc, etc. All these decisions are also taken keeping in mind the minimum profit to be earned by the company ,

SO managing is a company is not easy and in this atleast they gave choice to your friend, just look at this cite and its threads where there are really worse cases, where offers are given but not called at all for joining, and still all people in this cite speak high of dear HR dept and dear HR Manager, and put all blame on management, now from managerial point of view this decision is correct, unavoidable circumstances are there, hence its necessary to take such decisions. So dont treat it as company playing with career as if playing a cricket match, its all fair in love and war.

Hello Archna,

There are 3 ways to look @ the whole scenario--one of which is what deadsoul2011 mentioned.

Possibility-1: The Company could have genuinely faced the situation of competition & have had to reduce their margins. In which case, what they did seems to be very fair. [If this was indeed the case, I would expect them to share the details to your friend to enable him/her to judge about the fairness aspect--if this hasn't happened, in all probability, THIS ISN'T THE REASON]. If they didn't share the details, maybe your friend can ask to be shown the details.

Possibility-2: The Company didn't do their homework well & in the process got all their calculations wrong, but didn't want to admit this to your friend. Hence they give some reason to your friend to reduce their outflow. [In this case, maybe your friend can ask for the details--since he/she is a senior person, they can't refuse showing the details. And if they do refuse, in all probability, THIS COULD BE THE REASON].

Possibility-3: The Company did their homework well AND are getting good returns too, BUT have second thoughts of sharing a part of the revenue inflow with your friend [in terms of salary, etc]. This would be PLAIN GREED & DECEIT. [This cause, if true, will be tough to prove all by itself. The only way your friend can make a call if this is true is thru watching their body language during the interactions--no other way, as far as I can see since when someone is bent on deceit only tries to use any fair-play from the other person for cover-up & not for correction. If you notice our politicians, you will know what I mean]. If this is indeed the reason, then it's time for your friend to learn his/her lesson & quit ASAP--since more the delay, the tougher it will be to explain the step.

Now coming to look @ this from your friend's point-of-view & the options open.

What the other person [or company, etc] says or does IS NEVER IN OUR CONTROL. But what IS IN OUR CONTROL is whether we 'react' or 'respond' & 'how we do it' to the situation.

Choice-1: If on taking a deeper look @ the situation, like mentioned above, your friend finds that the company is indeed speaking the truth, maybe it's worth continuing there--after all not everyone speaks the truth even @ their own expense. To become part of the solution, so to say. This is where I agree with deadsoul2011.

Choice-2: If your friend finds out that this is more of a case of taking-advantage or plain deceit, then you know the step.

Choice-3: The extreme step would be what we keep seeing in CiteHR--'I want to teach them a lesson' syndrome, sort of. But in the process, he/she needs to be ready to face the consequences too of such a step--in terms of time spent, loss-of-focus, etc & at the end of the day, what is being gained.

Not sure if this is what you expected Archna :-)

Rgds,

TS

Dear Archanaji, whatever happened with your friend is not right. Actually the companies are targeting their own profit only and kept all the morals beside. Regards,
Just food for thought — maybe 'deadsoul2011' needs to rename himself/herself as 'livesoul2011', since his/her comments are so lively :-) Rgds, TS
Dear Ms. Archna
I don't know whether you will consider my suggestion are not but, all i would say that, your close friend ran out of luck........Right time will come and he needs to stay POSITIVE all the time rather loosing hopes.....
UPS AND DOWNS IN LIFE IS MANDATORY...........
With profound regards

Dear Ms. Archna
I don't know whether you may consider my suggestion are not but, all i would say that, your close friend ran out of luck........Right time will come and he needs to stay POSITIVE all the time rather loosing hopes.....
UPS AND DOWNS IN LIFE IS MANDATORY...........NO ONE CAN PREDICT THEIR OWN FUTURE NOT OTHERS......
With profound regards

Why dont you analyze and reply whether company is wrong or archanas friend is wrong, anyways no one will accept that dear HR dept or manager is wrong, rong ,
Thank you DeadSoul, TS and Khadir...

I really appreciate your efforts to provide insights.

DeadSoul, First of all, this friend of mine is not in HR, he joined in Sales & Marketing department as Sr. Manager. I would agree with you, but knowing companies, I would say 15 days is too less time to study or do future forecast. So i feel its a simple case of forgery.
And Yes, I agree with TS, now you should change your name from Dead to LIve.....:)

Hey TS,
Thanks a lot for such a close look at the problem. And yes i really appreciate the efforts made by you. well he has already resigned and back, now giving interviews. Out of the three scenarios mentioned, I also think 2 and 3 have the highest probability to be true.

I also feel that homework from his part was also not complete. And yes i very well expected something like this with proper reasoning...:) Thanks a lot.

Hi Khadir, Sorry..this kind of solution from you..not appreciated fully. I was expecting something better. Leaving everything to God may not be justifiable, unless we all put our best efforts. So seeking a better answer from you. I hope to get one. :)

Thanks again guys...

Lets see what other members have to contribute...

Dear Archna
Whatever happened to your friend is not acceptable and it is wrong from the company side.
But your friend can do one thing as a positive player, i.e., he can create the opportunity to increase the profit of the company by increasing the sales and controlling the overhead cost of the company.
If he proves and add the values for his post obviously the company will pay back with the curtailed benefits and pay package.
