I joined as AGM - Engineering & Projects (designation as per appointment letter) in 2007. Now I am transferred as AGM - Pharma Marketing (designation as per salary slip). However, the company never gave me job responsibilities of AGM-Pharma Marketing. Instead, the situation forced me to work as a "Medical Representative," the lowest position in the Pharma Marketing department. Please advise on what designation I should apply for VRS/CRS.

Hello GhaleBS, Obviously you will be using whatever Designation you have AS PER RECORDS/PAPER. What you are actually doing — meaning the role — doesn’t matter here. Rgds, TS

Hello Mr. BS Ghale,
In PSUs, when they transfer people, they certainly issue a transfer order. Have you received your transfer order? If yes, what is mentioned in it? If your payslip indicates AGM Pharma, it signifies that the transfer order has been forwarded to the HR/P&A/Accounts departments. In all official correspondences, you should use only the designation provided by the PSU. The job you are currently performing has no relevance in this context.

My transfer order from HR does not mention any designation. It simply states, "You have been transferred to the marketing department posted in the Northeast of India. Report to the GM of Marketing at the Head Office. However, your pay package remains the same." Later, on my salary slip, I see my designation as Pharma Marketing. Now, can anyone advise me on which designation (based on the appointment order or the salary slip) I should apply for VRS?

Since you are working in a PSU, please note that AGM is your designation—irrespective of which department you are posted to, be it engineering & projects, pharma marketing, design, etc.
The salary scale/grade for AGM in all departments would essentially remain the same, except maybe some minor variations depending on the location, nature of the job, etc. Only the basic salary and a few other components of the CTC (like HRA, DA, etc.) would change between individuals.
Between your Transfer Order and the Salary Slip, the Salary Slip is the one with more clear details—just go with it.
Hope this clarifies.

I am surprised that PSU can issue an appointment letter as AGM-Engineering and then transfer the individual to roles such as AGM-Marketing, Security, Housekeeping, or HR. If this is the case, in my opinion, the purpose of the appointment is defeated, and skilled manpower is being misused. Are they essentially destroying an engineer's career just because they are paying for it? I am not expressing hard feelings, but I question the kind of democratic country we are in.
