Understanding VUCA: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity

The meaning of volatility is the trait of being unpredictably irresolute. Therefore, how can there be a trend if something is unpredictable?

The meaning of uncertainty is being unsettled or in doubt or dependent on chance. Therefore, how can there be a trend if something is dependent on chance?

The meaning of complexity is the quality of being intricate and compounded or a development that complicates a situation. Therefore, how can there be a trend if the development complicates a situation?

Lastly, the meaning of ambiguity is an expression whose meaning cannot be determined from its context or unclearness by virtue of having more than one meaning. Therefore, how can one find a trend in unclearness?

Example of VUCA: The COVID-19 Pandemic

A classic example of VUCA is the COVID-19 pandemic. Just a few months ago, nobody would have predicted that India's quarterly growth could be -23.9%. However, today it is a reality. In fact, when there was an outbreak of the pandemic, we started receiving messages on WhatsApp stating India will emerge much stronger after the pandemic. Of course, those who daydream but call it positive thinking may do so even now, but our thinking should be grounded in logic and reality.

Nothing is predictable in a VUCA world, and it applies to the future of any profession as well. Therefore, let us do our best with what we are doing today!
