Why employee engagement activity are essential in any company. Is refreshment and extra work load on an employee are counted under those activity?

Employee engagement shall not be equated to bait in the form of refreshments given to an employee to make them shoulder extra workload. Paying for overtime or offering tea and snacks in return for staying late at work are not considered employee engagement activities, even though employees may feel satisfied with these perks. A satisfied employee does not necessarily equate to an engaged employee. An engaged employee is one who feels emotionally connected to their job and takes ownership of it.

To illustrate this point, let me share a short story. While on his way to the office, a man came across two individuals at a construction site breaking large stones into small pieces. He asked one of them, "What are you doing here?" The first person responded, "I am breaking this large stone into small bits so it can be used for laying the foundation." The man posed the same question to the other person, who replied, "I am constructing a Church, so I am breaking this large stone into small bits to lay the foundation for it." This simple story highlights the distinction between an engaged employee and a regular one.

Hi Manish,

Greetings...

Our good and learned friend Mr. B. Saikumar has just hit the nail on the head with that one-liner, "I am constructing a church and therefore I am breaking this large stone into small bits for laying the foundation for it." This is exactly how one brings out his best for the causes of the company and gets blended into the "Organisational Identity." This is absolutely a different concept and stands miles apart from offering "light refreshment" for putting in extra hours of work. I may sound rude, but it is also seen in workplaces that workers/staff accumulate this "refreshment cost" to buy groceries for use at home. What I mean to say with it is that "people at times consider this 'refreshment' as part of their salary/wages" that falls miles apart from the concept of "employee engagement."

Employee Engagement is about creating conditions and an environment in which employees offer their capacity and potential and are called the faces of the organization. This never happens without complete belief in organizational procedures and target achievements for total upliftment. Thus, it is said that emotional attachment to the organization is Engagement.

Hi Soumitra,

You have pointed out what I missed in my post. Yes, many employees treat O.T as additional income and become enraged instead of engaged when there is no overtime in any given month. Well said.
