Dear All,

I am the HR Manager in an IT company and I am looking for new and innovative ideas to boost employees' performance and to motivate them on a monthly basis. For example, I am considering implementing an "Employee of the Month" program, which has not yet been introduced in my company. However, I am seeking more new and innovative ideas.

Please help!

Thanks,
Mohini Panwar

Maybe some of these suggestions will help you:

Highlight Employee Performance

Use your monthly newsletter (if you have one) to create a 'spotlight' section to highlight employee performance.

Show Interest in Professional Development

Express interest in the employees' professional development, whether you fund it or not.

Appreciate Good Performers

Send 'thank you' notes to good performers.

Organize Inclusive Team Lunches

Organize team lunches for all employees, not just the top performers, as everyone's contribution is important.

Implement a Suggestion Box

Set up a suggestion box and ask your employees how they would like to be rewarded, as employees will feel more engaged when you implement their suggestions.

Thanks,
Radha

You have written that you are looking for "innovative ideas" to boost performance by motivating the employees. However, before embarking on innovative ideas, it is essential to disclose to the members of this forum what traditional methods you have implemented to improve motivation. The route to innovative ideas goes through traditional methods rather than bypassing them. It would have been helpful if you could provide more information on what you have done and the effectiveness of those methods.

Traditional Methods for Employee Motivation

Traditional methods such as the "Career Development Plan" (CDP) and the "Formal Mentoring Programme" (FMP) are still relevant. If you aim to enhance performance, the most crucial aspect is measuring what deserves to be measured, and that too scientifically. Have you done that? People perform at their best when there is a conducive organizational culture. Have you conducted a cultural survey at any time?

The Role of Managers in Motivation

Lastly, managers play a vital role in motivating employees. Their role surpasses everything else. Do your managers inspire their subordinates? Are the subordinates considering their managers as their role models? The power of managerial motivation is strong; it can overcome shortcomings in fulfilling hygienic needs. Therefore, you should not disregard traditional methods per se.
