Dear all HR friends,

Please suggest how I should start the HR function in my Engineering Firm. It is the first time we are starting the HR function, so I am confused on how to begin. We have a manpower of less than 50, including staff. Kindly provide the best suggestions for establishing an effective HR function.

Regards,
Ramkaran

From the HR standpoint, HR interventions do not change with respect to the strength of the employees. Whether you have 5 employees, 50, 500, or even 5,000, by and large, these remain the same. Out of a false assumption, employers give short shrift to many HR activities when the employee count is low.

Therefore, please confirm what your designation is and how your employers view HR. Do they consider HR a serious profession or HR professionals as "super clerks"? Much depends on that. To begin with, check whether you are proficient in the functions of the personnel department. Once you are proficient, move on to HR. Leapfrogging directly to HR may not be conducive in the long run.

Thanks,
