The Importance of Telephone Interviews

While inventing the telephone, Sir Graham Bell would never have imagined that his invention, designed for long-distance communication, would one day determine the outcome of 60% of career paths. Yes, more than 60% of applicants get rejected during the telephone screening round. But why is there a need for a telephonic round, especially when most of the questions asked will be repeated, and all the information can be extracted during a personal interview? The reasons are threefold: it saves effort, time, and money.

During a telephonic round:
1. First-level screening takes place, where candidates are selected based on their verbal and non-verbal communication skills.
2. Reconfirmation of all the factual information like qualifications and experience is done.
3. The candidate's level of interest is assessed by examining the extent of research they have already done.
4. The candidate's understanding of the job description and their role is determined to ensure they will not back out after the entire process has taken place.
5. It is also an opportunity for the candidate to ask relevant key questions about the profile they would be offered so that if something doesn't match up to their expectations, they can refuse to proceed further.

Tips for Acing a Telephone Interview

Remember this tip: Never treat a telephonic interview casually. Prepare for it even more rigorously than a face-to-face interview, as you won't have body language to rely on or hide behind. Here are 26 tips to acing a telephone interview:
1. First and foremost, NEVER treat it casually.
2. Research thoroughly before the telephonic interview, just like you would for a face-to-face interview.
3. The moment you submit your resume, you must make yourself available for a telephonic call from the recruiter. So, if you receive a call without prior notification, don't be annoyed. Either proceed with the interview, if you can, or politely request to reschedule, explaining your reasons. Never sound too busy.
