Hi guys! I am new in the HR field, and we are currently screening applicants. I would like to include an aptitude test as part of the screening program. Can you please help me with this? May you send me good questions for aptitude tests? With answers, of course. 

Thanks in advance.

Understanding Aptitude Tests

There isn't such a thing as a general aptitude test. The point of an aptitude test is to determine how good somebody is at something. Therefore, it needs to be targeted to the specific job.

If you are hiring computer programmers, then an aptitude test would include programming questions. If you are hiring customer service staff, then you might test their language skills. If the questions are not related to the job skills, having the test will not help you in screening the candidates.

Hi Chinea, apart from just having an aptitude test, you should also have a person who will be able to judge the aptitude test. It should be done through professionals, and as Chris pointed out, it should be specifically devised for each job profile.

I would generally only suggest any sort of aptitude test for technical jobs, where very specific knowledge is essential.

Hire for Attitude, Train for Aptitude

In all other positions, I recommend that you "hire for attitude, train for aptitude" - find people who are smart, energetic, and proactive, and then train them yourself. You will always end up with better staff this way.

The Importance of Comprehensive Assessments in Applicant Screening

An aptitude test is just a part of integral assessments. Merely conducting an aptitude test would limit your judgment of the selection's reliability and validity. Combine it with a string of assessments (Aptitude + Personality Assessments). That should be enough.

And yes, you do need an expert to judge the scale scores—not assessment executors, but professionally qualified psychology postgraduates who have clinical expertise in providing result-based interpretations of obtained scores on such assessments. This is because the interaction of both tests is a complex procedure, and without a psychology background, the information would not be ethical.

If you need assistance with the same, you may contact the undersigned.
