Dear All,
As per the government notification, there are 18 public holidays in 2010. How many holidays can a manufacturing organization provide? Is there any legislation specifying the number of paid holidays to be granted in a year?

Notification is given by the state government for the Industrial Holidays each year. You have to provide leaves on mandatory days on Republic Day, May Day, 15th August, October 2nd, and the State formation day of respective states. Generally, 10 to 12 days are declared as holidays by the government for the manufacturing facilities/factories. The Labour Office releases the list of holidays for factories.
In case you want to exercise any discretion on the list of holidays without omitting the National holidays stated above, you need to take approval of the list from the Assistant Commissioner of Labour without reducing the number of days.

Dear smi227,
You are asking how many holidays a manufacturing organization can give in a year, and the answer is "as you can." You are required to give minimum statutory national and festival holidays in a year if your organization is covered by any laws that mandate the declaration of national and festival holidays. If your manufacturing organization is covered under the Factories Act, 1948, and your appropriate Government is any of the States, then refer to that State Industrial Establishment (National and Festival Holidays and Casual and Sick Leaves) Act for the granting and declaration of these holidays.
