Hi, I want to know whether the HR in India and abroad work the same way. After doing MBA HR in India, do we get the same preference abroad? Are there any possibilities that after doing an MBA in India, we get jobs abroad in the HR department.

Thank you.

For overseas working, you have to be a specialist and a certified HR professional from the respective country, especially in Western countries. Indian certification does not carry weight.

As far as HR practices are concerned, there is a fundamental difference in approach. The Western approach is based on scientific methods and market-driven parameters as HR indicators.

In the Middle East, HR practices of the West are often followed for specialist jobs, with a comprehensive compensation architecture different from Indian practices. While soft skills may be similar, there is a significant gap in hardcore specialist jobs dealing with manpower planning, compensation, and succession planning. The demand for certain jobs is high due to population size differences between India, the West, and the Middle East.

In India, there is a surplus of manpower and certification. Therefore, issues related to man management, compensation, and competency management are relatively secondary compared to the West or Middle East.

Wherever human engagement is needed, HR is also required. There may be differences in procedures and practices of HR. Depending upon the number of employees and their attitude, the functions of HR and the effort required to implement the rules will differ. This is true even within India. The preference that an HR manager receives in a particular firm may be different from what he receives in another firm. Therefore, it is advised to work according to the situation and work culture of the respective organization.

Thank you both for your responses. I am planning to pursue my MBA from Mumbai University with a specialization in HR. Furthermore, I aim to study abroad, which is why I posted this thread. Could you please advise me on the current situation regarding recruitment in the HR field in countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Britain? These countries are known to have a broader scope in HR. Do you think there will be enough opportunities in those regions?

The present recession will last only for three or four months. During the recession, many companies have reduced workers. Once the economy starts improving, there will be recruitment and selection to fill up the positions. The HR will have a tight schedule then also. Therefore, the scope of HR will increase only. After all, HR covers all the three - shrishti, sthiti, and samharam (creation, retaining, and destroying). It is required for recruitment and selection, needed for maintaining or retaining, and for retrenching!!!

Wow, Madhu! Great explanation, and you're right. I work as an HR Generalist in the Middle East. I do not find much difference between working in India and here, except for the salary structure as there is no tax deduction here. Also, the fact is here we deal with employees from different nationalities, unlike in India. So initially, a little learning is required to understand their wavelength, and once that's on, we can keep going. After all, HR is all about building relationships first.

I am quite sure that with your building relationship kind of HR function, it does not matter whether you work in the Middle East or Far East countries because inside such small-scale companies, HR hardly matters.

We are discussing HR practices in global companies and major business houses with a scale of professional HR know-how. These are HR processes with world-class management concept practices only visible in such companies that engage the largest workforce, mostly hiring Western HR professionals in the Middle East. For example, all airlines in the Middle East, FMCG companies, Oil & Gas, Petrochemicals, etc., follow the Western HR model. I am sure you are not engaged in these companies.
