Dear Friends,
We are a small 100 member IT company serving in open-source technology. Right now as a policy we don’t recruit fresher’s because of proper training system. Right now I need some clarification on;
1.) How to create a technical training center? (We tried using aptech corporate training facility, but there faculty itself is not that competent in technology his is training, I want to know the process followed by other companies)
2.) I want some samples on induction training. (as we have our own induction program conducted by our HR team, we still find some gaps, since the induction program is more of theory or presentation session, I want to know ways to make a effective induction program where people feel this as there company).
Awaiting for more help from you guys…
Regards,
Anand

Dear Friend,
Thank you very much for your efforts & time. I went thru the links you have. But what we need is to know how other IT companies are doing Technical Training for freshers, the problem is Technical Training is, People don't take teaching as serious job, so we are not getting experienced programmers as trainers. Also when we try to use some of our good programmers to train people, the lack training skills.
We are planning to take training seriously and we want to work out a way for this.
Thank you,
Regards,
Anand

Suppose

No of employees hired = 30

For facility there can be 2 options

1. In house facility

2. Outside facility ( hotels, training facilities )

So if you don’t have in house facility then option of outside training facility is good but in your case it is not good enough as you said you had experience with a company. I think you have everything but you don’t know how to use them.

Who will train?

Use your senior programmer for that purpose or if you find any guy in the market who can train in open source, that I strongly doubt you gonna find. Use your resources then

Why?

They know the company structure

They can train guys well as they are working in open source

Also new hires will learn the company culture from them well before they started working etc

Problem is?

How you will make them (Sr. Programmers) to train them?

They are ways like

1. Give them bonus on training specific group

2. Link their increments and promotions with this thing. Etc

Now what else? Right?

They are not serious in teaching them. Now using bonus/increment/promotion etc will make them think about that but you have to do that very carefully as Sr. technical guys are very moody so better not annoy them with any policy. But there is one weakness of these technical guys they see money, challenge. and recognition as main motivator. Give them this and they will start training them properly.

How you can get the results?

This is tricky part. Prepare a test for trainees and ask them to give it before start of training and it should not be MCQs use question/answers to get what they know. Give all guys score. Then after training of 2 weeks take same test again and see how much they score now. If the improvement is less than 40% then it is serious ask your trainers to train them properly and design training again.

Communicate all Sr. programmers that they get bonus on percentage improved by group. If %age improved is less than 50% then give them very less bonus. To get good bonus they need %age of above 80% from group. As I already said, carefully draft this system.

Use Training Questionnaires, both Pre and post as well as training scorecard in this calculating efficiency as they will really help you design good training program for new hires/fresh.

I hope this information will help you.
