The topic of discussion is quite interesting .
I agree to the views of Mr.Dhinakar,Srinivas and kamal.
There are certain code of conduct though not explicitly stated in the company's policy the employees are expected to follow.
I don't agree to the opinion that just b'coz a boss expects his subordinates to say bye to the him ,he can be labelled being bossy!
Mr.Kumar is expressing his opinion without considering the view point of the other person.The point i see in this situation is nothing but communication.One has to communicate to his superior when he leaves office at the end of the day- a courtesy expected of u.This is the time where u can give a brief report on the day"s work,if there is any pending work specify the time at which u will be able to submit the same.pl don't be under the impression that your boss will be available at his office always.unless and until u communicate with him properly,u may not be aware of his busy schedule for the next day.If you need to discuss something u need to put in a word with him before hand so that he can accommodate u in his busy hours.He should be kept informed of the day to day activities and if you have taken leave for the next day it would be better to remind your boss about the same at the end of the day,so that he can plan things accordingly.It shows your initiativeness and your diligence rather than your bosss coming and asking about the status of your progress.
Iam sure Mr.kumar definitely is in the habit of saying bye to your colleagues when u leave the office .so what is the harm in saying the same thing to your boss.It shows there exists some communication gap between u and your boss.
You can definitely work it out!

I admire him for his dedication and commitment towards work but shouldn't he realise that just because he is willing to sacrifice his own personal life doesn't mean that his subordinates are the same?
With all due respect for the arguments about 'needing information/files or other stuff' and about ' staying back to complete important work', these situations cannot and should not arise everyday! This from a person in HR-(I mean the boss)-- people who are supposed to atleast sympathise if not empathise.
Apart from all the above opinions, I think that it is a good idea to tell your boss when you are leaving. A cheerful 'Goodmorning' when you come and an equally friendly 'Good night or good bye or Au revoir' can improve boss-subordinate relations like nothing else can. Of course I'm assuming that you are working well.

Very soon, the boss start expecting all employees to put in extra working hours.
So, my dear Bachelors let me tell you, life changes when u get married
and start having a family... office is no longer a priority, family
is... and that's when the problem starts... becoz u start having
commitments at home too.
For your boss, the earlier "hardworking" guy suddenly seems to become
a "early leaver" even if u leave an hour after regular time... after
doing the same amount of work.
People leaving on time after doing their tasks for the day are labeled as work-shirkers...
Girls who thankfully always (its changing nowadays... though) leave on time are labeled as "not up to it". All the while, the bachelors pat
their own backs and carry on "working" not realizing that they r
spoiling the work culture at their own place and never realize that
they would have to regret at one point of time.
*So what's the moral of the story?? *
* Very clear, LEAVE ON TIME!!!
* Never put in extra time " *unless really needed *"
* Don't stay back un-necessarily and spoil your company work culture
which will in turn cause inconvenience to you and your colleagues.
There are hundred other things to do in the evening..
Learn music...
Learn a foreign language...
try a sport... TT, cricket.........
importantly Get a girl friend or gal friend, take him/her around town...
* And for heaven's sake net cafe rates have dropped to an all-time low
(plus, no fire-walls) and try cooking for a change.
Take a tip from the Smirnoff ad: *"Life's calling, where are you??"*
Please pass on this message to all those colleagues And please do it
before leaving time, don't stay back till midnight to forward this!!!

Garima,that was wonderful !.In this context i would like to share an incident which throws light into how different things are for married and bachelors at the work front.I had a colleague who used to laugh at the lady staff who used to leave immediately after the office hrs.this was the scene when he was a bachelor and he used to stay back late in the night.The scenario changed completely when he got married -you won't believe he was the first to leave the office int eh evening.When enquired about the same he said i've got to do so many other things in the personal front. What i feel is that irrespective of the gender one needs to maintain a work life balance.

I acknowledge and accept Dhinakaran's view in connection to this, i guess you should not take this as a issue, in my experience i had never moved out of my dept without saying a bye to my boss and similarly my subordinate and boss always said bye before they leave.
Treat your boss as a friend, accept your boss as your friend then only you can learn from him, (the areas you have never addressed, dared to address so far).
Always see the positive side, cheerup dear.

From my understanding from PBS KUMAR post, the boss is supposed to be not in the office whole day long, and back to the office 5 or 10 minutes before office hour, while the employees are going to leave to join the family but called by boss to ask an hour or so v.v.
It it hard to balance work and family and upset what the boss used to.
