Many youngsters with degrees; not getting jobs; venture into Consultancy. Many fails unable to pay for rent, staff cost etc., some succeeds and puts up with some margin.
My Case:
I started working as Assistant from 1979 after passing Degree. then APO, PO, DM(P), PM, AM, HRM, SR.HRM & AGM-HR&A. Recently, due to our Supreme Court ban on Iron Ore in Karnataka, our Steel Plant near Bangalore; Retrenched all employees. I am now Idle BUT, made all HR works of 25 yrs. in my PC to work as HR Consultant. I am 57 yrs. and healthy but unable to get regular job. Hence, I have decided to pursue Consultancy and contribute thru the helpof CiteHR and HR Patrons. I have been a regular reader of Cite HR from 2007 but due to work pressure, was not able to share or contribute( I was not knowing how to correspond/address with CiteHR). Under my EX-VP & GM-HR&A, I collected all HR matters in my PC. Further, we had 2 Consultants to assist in HR Policy Matters. It is human tendency to keep himself engaged in some activity in which he already worked or gained knowledge in the past. especially those who are hard working. Therefore, many Cos. today extend the service of those retiring ; to utilise his valuable exp. This also helps the Retiree for gainful employment.
As rightly pointed out by Mr.A.John, the market is saturated. Still; experienced professional can contribute for the benefit of HR due to their vast experience in handling all situations which many juniors may not be knowing. Today, most Cos. are headed by Technocrats and ignore HR. Though many Labr.Acts are there & welfare facilities can be provided; HR donot get consideration. Unfair treatment, Low wages due to unemployment, discrimination all adds to HR problems. Lakhs of money is spent for Tech. works; but HR is controlled even for basic needs. Technical people dominate many Cos. & donot allow HR to discharge its obligation to its own HR. Even when an employee is dying, HR is advised to follow rules than helping bereaved family.
I have set up HR Dept. in 2 of the Companies, Framed & Certified S.O., HR Manual, all systems, policies, Rules etc., I am furnishing below details of HR Jobs done to set up HR dept. etc., for ur kind infn. I understand the reasons why people want to set up for themselves. It is no different here in Australia. Jobs are rapidly disappearing, yet people still have to eat and put a roof over their heads.
It is also particularly hard for older people here in Australia. Young managers don't want old people. Sad fact of life, and made even worse by the fact that our government has just announced that they plan to raise the retirement age to 70 years. There will be no jobs for those people.
I myself am 64 and reach current retirement age next year. I cannot get work. I had contract work up until February this year, but my YOUNG boss decided not to renew my contract. There was no reason for him not to. I was doing my job, we had no problems, etc etc. Now people complain because they miss my knowledge and skills.
My background is in Administration, and I have over 45 years experience in all aspects. But no-one wants that now. So I am trying to re-establish my training business as I am a certified Trainer.
With your vast experience in HR, I would suggest that you could set up a HR Consultancy Business, and contract your services out to small start up companies who need to get the HR department set up in their organisation. You could offer a package whereby you go into the organisation, establish their HR functions and put all the processes in place. You hire and train the required staff to manage the HR function, and then leave them to get on with it. You can also offer ongoing fee for service assistance and advice for say 6 months after.
I would suggest this could be a very lucrative business for you, make full use of your skills and experience, and give you a good income, without the cares of working for someone else who doesn't care about you.
