In an IT company is 5 days a week compulsory???
We have a team of 5 developers, 2 sales persons, billing... We were having 5 days a week in our organisation alternate week. Once in two weeks, we had 5 days and another week 6 days.
But due to market conditions and few pending deadlines, we had to cancel this. But after around 4 months, they came up again asking for 5 days a week and they say, they can not work for 6 days as they gets tired (). So, they need a break for 2 days to work properly for 5 days. As they have to think and apply their mind which requires proper rest... and this kind of arguments.
So, my question is, IT company should have 5 days a week? Is it mandatory?

Hi Raj,
It is not mandatory to keep 5 days a week concept in the company. It depends upon organisation and its management according to their working requirement to keep the off.
In your case the employees are giving different reasons, but your can see the requirement of the company.
In case you are not getting any solution then you can try following one:
Devide the group of people who are required to work on Saturdays also and give them alternate Saturday off. Because of the same your office will keep on working contineously.

Dear Raj,
It is not about 5 days or 6 days, if you want you can work for 4 days a week also. But the truth of the matter is that you cannot work for more then 9 hours a day subject to a maximum of 48 hours a week. But if an employer wants his employees to work for less then 48 hours a week ( which is better then what the statute says) he is more then welcome to do so. Hope you understand.

Thanks for the update. This will definitely help me to form the policy regarding this.
Now one more point which has came to my mind recently.
They all are going for outing during/after lunch. Is it something which we can stop? Even sales persons are going out for around 30-40 minutes leaving the whole sales dept. empty. Can we ask them not to go out of office during working hours? Working hours definitely includes lunch time. As customer or their call can come at any time.

Dear raj:
If your lunch time is for 1 hour then break it into two of 1/2 an hour each. Make sure that all of them cannot leave their workplace at the same time. For one group it has to be for the first half hour and when they come back the next group can go for lunch. But make sure that when ever they leave , they must be at their place of work at the end of the lunch hour. Now how you will convince them depends on you. You are the HR person, right??
