These are not legally defined processes. If your rules provide for a PIP, that should define the time period. The time period should appear reasonable under external scrutiny in the case of a legal issue. Additionally, you should document the feedback and support provided and ensure the employee feels that the organization has supported them adequately in resolving the situation.
