Hi, I'm on a sabbatical due to health issues, and since my company is not willing to extend my leave for a couple more weeks, I've decided to resign from my position. However, upon discussion with HR, they've stated that they can only terminate me and not let me resign since I won't be able to serve my 90 days' notice. What impact will this have on my career profile in the future if they terminate me from my current position? Any advice on how to tackle this would be helpful.

Hi, it is better to negotiate with HR for proper relieving instead of termination. You can inquire about the pay in lieu of notice option. Future employers might not prefer a candidate with a termination background, even if you have a valid reason such as ill health. They might perceive this negatively in terms of your physical fitness to execute the work.

Dear member,

Firstly, let's address the misconception about "sabbatical."

The meaning of a sabbatical

Sabbatical leave is a period during which a person does not report to their job but remains employed by their company. Employees typically take sabbaticals to pursue personal interests like studying, traveling, writing, or volunteering. Sabbaticals can be paid or unpaid but essentially involve extended periods of leave.

If you are unable to work due to health issues, then it would be considered "Medical Leave" rather than a sabbatical. Medical leave could be paid or unpaid.

Impact of employment termination on future career

Your question pertains to the impact of employment termination on your future career. I suggest approaching the managing director to request leniency in fulfilling the 90-day notice period. Your sincere plea should sway them to waive this requirement. Clearly articulate why you are unable to fulfill the duties and how termination could hinder your future job prospects.

Thanks,
