Is it okay to install a CCTV camera on the shop floor?
Are there any legal implications?
How to safeguard the trust of employees and workmen while installing cameras. Main reason to use cameras to analyze and track how the same manpower is being utilized on different assembly lines during the same shift..

Reply: - It depends on the mindset of the management. Secondly, it also depends on the mindset of the labour union leader, in case if you have.

Are there any legal implications?

Reply: - I don't think so but the members with the legal background are the better persons to give a reply.

How to safeguard the trust of employees and workmen while installing cameras.

Reply: - This is the most important question. Installation of the CCTV cameras could be perceived as management is distrusting the workers. There is a possibility of decrease in their morale. Whether it will impact the organisation's culture that cannot be said. However, the negative impact could impact the organisation's productivity as a whole.

The main reason to use cameras to analyse and track how the same manpower is being utilized on different assembly lines during the same shift.

Reply: - To do this, you do not have to install the CCTV cameras as such. It can be done by instituting the various measures of performance. Start measuring the costs and ratios associated with the various production processes. The numbers speak in themselves. Involve the workers in the brainstorming session on how to reduce the cost or increase/decrease some ratio. Their participation in the decision-making process will motivate them. This, in turn, will foster a healthy environment in the company.

Absolutely there will not be any legal ramification in installing CCTV in shop floor.
Now-a-days many company management do this and CEO/Top executive can view
this even in a remote area / or from his mobile phone.
CCTVs are installed at Security area, Front gate (Entrance/Exit), bio-matric punching
area, shop floor, material handling area, WIP area, Quality testing area, Office area, Canteen,
Washing area .. and the like.
As we are in the digital era, Hence it is justified.
At the same time, management should ensure that their employees are motivated.

Installation of CCTV on shop floor/production area is not an issue in the legal sense.
But it has an impact on mind set of workers.
What is the reason for the sudden step to install CCTV?
Any incident or breach of norms etc?
One will have to do it in a sensitive manner and keep workers informed informally and friendly manner-highlighting it is a security measure,rather than as a surveillance tool
Advantages of deterring thefts/unauthorised visits by outsiders can be highlighted.
A policy statement of who will monitor the cctvs will also help and also data/images etc
Confidence of workers needs to be built up.
Privacy laws in iIndia are still a work in progress.
Notices regarding CCTV on site needs to be displayed and data retention policy also needs to be stated.
Best is to think out the reasons and inform workers and take them into confidence as it can affect morale.
Unilateral installation can be avoided.
