Hi, This is Jagan from Coimbatore, and I am posting for the 1st time. I work for a consultancy, and I would like to know the procedure for giving a layoff to employees at the Middle and Senior levels. These individuals are paid between 10K to 30K.

Hi Jagan,
You have to see whether these employees are coming under the purview of the definition as "workmen" under the Industrial Disputes Act. If the employees are classified as workmen under the ID Act, then you have to pay layoff compensation and obtain permission from the authority (Labour Department) if the number exceeds 100 workmen. If they fall into the management and staff category, it is not necessary to follow these procedures.
With regards,
Roy
