Dear Shweta, it is a good thing that you are going to address SME people on the aspect of HR. The subject/concept of HR is not a small one; rather, it is vast, and people in the audience may not find it attractive. It is too difficult to discuss in detail at this point in time. In my opinion, you should prepare your topic on the Scope and Functions of HR for SMEs. Also, discuss the benefits that boost the business and do not forget to highlight the downfall of a business in the absence of HR practices. Always try to provide current and recent examples of good practices only. It all depends on your skill and competency in verbal communication.

Wishing you a successful event.

Dear Shweta, I have given a suggestion on the topic in my previous post already. Nevertheless, with the clarification in your second post, I recommend you speak on "Value Addition by HR". I recommend this topic because the underestimation of HR is a bane amongst SMEs. With profit as the only motive, they consider HR as a cost center. They do not understand how HR helps in shaping the culture of the company or how HR helps in bringing structure to the organization. Therefore, talking about the Role of HR in Shaping an Organization's Culture is the strongly recommended topic for the owners of SMEs.

Establishment of a Sound Performance Management System (PMS) Another important topic could be the establishment of a sound Performance Management System (PMS). This is because SMEs do not necessarily measure what deserves to be measured. Over the years in business, I have seen SMEs not measuring certain vital organization's ratios. This is because they rationalize their SME status and defer the measurement for the future as they grow. However, this never happens. However, talking about this subject is no easy task. One needs to have an in-depth understanding.

Dear Shweta,

Effective Performance Management System is most important. Along with that, kindly focus on capability building, Succession Planning, and People development programmes for Resources Optimization.

Whenever you explore yourself on any site, please reply with respect to Senior HR associates who are providing very value-added advice to us. We must always remember our Indian culture and strive to be continuous learners.

Thanks,
Mili

Human Capital Management

You can emphasize Human Resources as Human Capital Management. Let those SME owners know how important Human Resources are for any organization. People are the Prime Movers, as our (Larsen & Toubro's) founding father Mr. Henning Holck Larsen said. In one of his speeches, he mentioned, "Buildings may be there, factories may be there, machinery may be there, but without people, nothing can happen." At that time, we coined a tagline: "People are the Prime Movers."

HR as a Cost Center

As our professional friend Mr. Divekar mentioned, many SMEs consider HR as a Cost Center. A strong HR team is ideal for any organization if it wants to focus on profitability through quality recruitment, meaningful training, and proper placement of candidates suitable for each job role! Focus on this single aspect in your speech. You can certainly elaborate on this in greater detail.

Best wishes

Please focus on three aspects:

1. SMEs challenges
2. Technological advances (IoT, Design Thinking, AI, etc.)
3. Changing characteristics of employees (especially young employees)

And you could get a lot of 'catchy' relevant topics!
