Why Is My New Employer Asking to Keep My Original PAN Card or Passport?

I have received a job offer from an IT company, and they have requested me to provide either my original PAN card or passport, which they will retain. Could you please inform me why they are requesting the original PAN card/passport?

why? Ask for reasons. There is no good reason as to why they want to retain your originals. Originals have to be returned to you after verification. Pon

Thanks for your reply. I asked the HR people of that company. They said they will retain for verification and will return back to me once I complete my one month employment with that company.
