Environment Day Clarification and Tips

The Environment Day does not fall on May 5th. It is observed on June 5th. You can do the following to contribute to environmental awareness:

Simple Tips for Environmental Improvement

- Switch off a light and see if you can still work comfortably. Most of the time, we have too many lights on in our offices and homes.
- Unplug all battery chargers, mobile chargers, and similar devices when they are not in use.
- Switch off your car while you wait (at least if it will take a minute or longer) at red lights.
- Before throwing away paper, see if you can use the back of the paper to plan, make casual notes, or write things to do. You will help save many trees over your lifetime.
- Most of the time, air conditioners can be set to a slightly warmer setting after cooling the room.
- Computers and other electronic devices can be turned off at night or when you will not be using them for a long duration.

There can be thousands of cool ideas that will help us avoid global warming and keep the earth green. You are welcome to add your tips below.

- Give free saplings to your employees to grow trees.
- Post environmental slogans around the factory premises.
- Advertise in newspapers or on cable TV about the importance of ozone and environmental aspects.
- Organize competitions like drawing, essay writing, and speeches on the topic of World Environment Day.

You can also conduct the following:

1. Essay Competitions
2. Road Shows
3. You can select a theme based on the environmental impacts of activities within your organization and conduct quiz competitions. (Issues like Global Warming, Ozone Depletion, Acid Rain, etc.)
4. You can arrange lectures with experts from various fields, such as water management (Rain Harvesting, Roof Water Harvesting, Water Recycling, etc.).
5. You may show the film on Global Warming by Al Gore, the former American Vice President. If you need the film, please send me your address so I can send you a copy. This is a 2-hour film available in both English and Hindi.

Already, Mr. Sudhir and Mr. Alponse have given an idea regarding the Environment Day celebration to you. I have never celebrated Environment Day, so I can't provide new ideas; whatever I thought of, Mr. Sudhir and Mr. Alponse have already written the same.

The Theme

The 2012 theme for World Environment Day is "Green Economy: Does it include you?" Evidently, there are two parts to this theme. The first tackles the subject of the Green Economy. This is where some people shut off their minds because they find the concept of the Green Economy a little too complex to understand.

On the contrary, the Green Economy is really something that is applicable all around you, and it is easy to imagine how you fit into it. Visit the 'What is the Green Economy?' page to read a layman's narrative of this concept.

The UN Environment Programme defines the Green Economy as one that results in improved human well-being and social equity while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcities. In its simplest expression, a green economy can be thought of as one which is low carbon, resource-efficient, and socially inclusive.

Practically speaking, a Green Economy is one whose growth in income and employment is driven by public and private investments that reduce carbon emissions and pollution, enhance energy and resource efficiency, and prevent the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. These investments need to be catalyzed and supported by targeted public expenditure, policy reforms, and regulation changes.

But what does all this mean for you? Well, this is essentially what the second part of the theme is all about. If the Green Economy is about social equity and inclusiveness, then technically, it is all about you! The question, therefore, asks you to find out more about the Green Economy and assess whether, in your country, you are being included in it.

To learn more about the Green Economy, bookmark the World Environment Day website, and we shall be unraveling the concept of what the Green Economy really is and what it means to you ahead of World Environment Day.
