Hi all,

I don't know how to read a pay scale. For example: If a pay scale is given as: Rs. 10,000 - 470/6 - 12,820 - 500/3 - 14,320 - 560/7 - 18,240... what does it mean? It would be really great if you could help me in this regard.

It's a simple function. The initial offer is a Basic or Consolidated Salary at $10,000. Annual Increments at $470 X 6 years = $2,820. Annual Increments at $500 X 3 years = $1,500. Annual Increments at $560 X 7 years = $3,920. The TOTAL is $8,240 + $10,000 = $18,240 Efficiency Bar.

If something else is mentioned instead of Annual Increments, such as monthly increments, weekly increments, or based on achievements or targets, it will be interpreted accordingly according to the terms and conditions of the appointment letters. This explanation is based on market interpretation, and in practice, this type of pay scale is referred to as a "time scale" with increments. However, there are many other compensation modules available apart from this.

Generally, such types of pay scales are adopted by government authorities. This pay scale indicates only the basic pay, not the gross. To obtain the gross pay, one has to add DA, ADA, other allowances, etc. From your above figures, the starting basic pay of an employee is Rs. 20,000 with a yearly increment of Rs. 500 until it reaches Rs. 21,500 (i.e., for the initial 3 years), and then increases by Rs. 700 until it reaches Rs. 23,600, and so on.

The same scale also indicates that an existing employee who has already completed 9 years in service will get a basic pay of Rs. 26,300 and an increment of Rs. 1,000 until reaching the next slab.
