Dear Swati, In my opinion HR is like a double edged sword, one has to know when to be rude and when to be sweet. So HR has to be sweet or sour depends on the situation.

I am agree with VISHAL.
For HR personal,'SITUATIONAL MANAGEMENT' as a Rudeness person and Sweet person depending on situation is must to handle different type of people in industry as a Co-ordinator.

In my opinion HR name itself suggests as human resources which needs to be ably utilized. HR should be more focused on achieving targets of an organization on schedule keeping the employees spirit high. For this sometimes hr needs to bent the rules and be a bridge between workers and management. Any issues needs to be dealt logically keeping the relationship values in mind.

Actually If We talk about specifically in respect of HR Executive then he should be Polite but HR rules should show some rigid and Rudy mode so that every employee and other department should follow those policies in disciplined way. HR Executive should be Polite .

I am not sure that exactly with what in her mind Swati has raised this question. The word ' rude ' has many synonyms;all these mean the same thing " disrespectful behaviour ".Rudeness need not necessarily be verbal ; at times non-verbal expressions would more be annoying and highly detestible.In general, in our interpersonal transactions we have to be courteous and considerate.In the process of managing people in particular, rudeness is to be avoided even in provoking situations. A HR manager charged with the inalienable responsibility of inculcating the sense of belongingness in the entire human resource of the organization has to be more cautious in such a situation to avoid unnecessary escalation of the problem faced. He should be conscious of the fact that any one who fails to be a part of a solution becomes automatically a party to the problem.While approaching any problem relating to people, he should not lose sight of the principles of " sama - dhana - beda - dandam " and apply them effectively in their orderly sequence.

HR person should be a People's Person, should always be approachable, must be firm and straight forward as far as compliance of the Company's Policy. HR person should always remain connected with the employees. HR person's conduct should be Professional and Polite.

As rightly observed by many members, HR is people oriented.
All the other discipline people are HR's customers.
To exhibit a behaviour of RUDENESS to the customers is
certainly an act of effrontery and disgrace.
In certain cases, where the Orgnaization rules call for
HR can afford to be STRICT but not rude at any time.

HR person must never be rude. Certainly they must not behave like joker to please the employees but they should never be rude.
Rudeness shows inefficiency of HR like a rude school teacher.
If HR is rude, organization should kick them out, otherwise who will kick them out, they can behave like a dictator without any penalty.
Like teachers used to beat the kids in the name of teaching them morality is no more valid.

Being RUDE will never help anyone in any Business including running your family/ friends or relations.
Being STRICT when needed, does not necessarily means being rude. Moreover I personally feel HR does not only mean Human Resource but Human Relations as well and every relation has different traits, moods and behavior and HR personal should behave according to the situation.
But being rude, I wonder if it ever works?

HR should always create confidence among employees, be approachable, which will help us to detect the future problems and nib them at budding stage itself. Being rude may bring a false discipline which in no way is helpful for the organization.

Now, that's a loaded question, like, "Have you stopped beating your wife?". If you say, "Yes", you agree that you beat her earlier and if you say, "No", it means you are continuing to be evil.
Stereotyping entire groups never helps - all salesmen are ruthless, all HR are rude, all bosses are bloodsuckers! Pls tell us about the specific incident/context and then people on this forum may provide inputs.

HR is a person who leads, manages, motivates and guides the human resource i.e the employees from white collared to blue collared workers, he should co-ordinate and have patience to solve any crises,hence cant be rude.

It is strange that such a question has invoked a huge response. Firstly the question is based on a personal experience with absolutely no background explained moreover nobody even questioned it. It seems one person had a unpleasant experience with an HR executive and raised it in this forum alongwith a poll on the same. Ms Swati are you planning to show the poll results and the inputs to the HR executive and tell him/her that her behaviour has been judged RUDE.

The first and most important thing which qualifies a person as HR is RESPONSE and HUMANITY.
Rudeness has to be there, when the policies are not met by an individual, and mostly everybody has to know that HR is not a Cool or leisure job, it is the most Responsible job.
HR is just an interface between Employees and the management, the employees are the customers of HR, so if those customers are not satisfied then there is no point in having a HR.

HR has to be approachable, I think any employee can come to HR and they can share any obstacle which are affecting their productivity.
HR has to be friendly not a friend.
HR has to be firm and if people do not know the difference between firm and rude than they can take their call.

Hope you doing well!!

Good question swathi. Even i used to have this question at first days and by seeing people in my experience i have faced few situations were my pioneer and seniors used to poke me often to not to be so kind to the people and I was wondered why we cant?, why we should be rude or should carry serious faces to them though we can manage the situation. Later my experience thought me many things by that I can say 'yes' we can be rude at times, means "once in a blue moon".

I think you may wonder why? for this want to give two cases to make it clear

Case 1: We are interviewing hundreds of candidates daily. You might face some people with silly questions or in some people asking you such a question in which the question itself gives the answer and few just to get interact they irritate. specially Here try to be patient as much you can and you need to be. Being an HR the first quality is Humanity as in the the name HR itself says. We are here to give the best services (mankind) to the company, handling the situation even in any worst cases. Try all the ways to give your best while answering.

Case 2 : We will find people caring attitude and indifferent body language answering in rude way, here give them good answers but dont forget smile on your face, but at times this situations seems to be out of control means we feel impatient through we try to control in this case I say Yes we can be rude.

One thing we need to remember that situation differs with person to person. In most of the cases we deal the person as per our perception.

I have given the information from my experience. Please revert if you need any clarification on this.
