My name is Anuradha. Presently, I'm working in the hospitality industry where I'm in HR. I'm a simple graduate and have more than 6 years of experience in HR. For the last 3 years, I have been in an HR generalist role, but not in the core; I'm more into HR coordination.
Now, for growth, I want to transition into core HR, where I can independently handle HR generalist responsibilities. I don't know where to start because there is no senior here who can provide guidance. I am seeking information on all aspects of HR functions. Where can I acquire this information? Should I enroll in any short-term courses to enhance my skills or is there any other advice you can provide? Please advise.

Hi,
One thing you have to keep in mind is that the knowledge you acquire from the curriculum will help you understand the concept and not necessarily how it is practiced. All courses will strengthen your thought process to execute any functions of HR.
Now, regarding your query, there are many courses in our country like part-time diploma courses offered by XLRI, IIM-C, SHRM (not a diploma) which you can pursue from your nearest center. You can check the time frame and enroll because these part-time courses are conducted in a live mode. Additionally, you will become an alumnus of the institute of your choice. You will gain practical knowledge as many associates from various places will be part of it.
Thank you.

Hi Anuradha, you have a lot of experience; for the past 6 years, you have been working, and it's great that you are seeking a generalist profile in HR for the last 3 years. The very first mistake you made is not pursuing your Masters in HR alongside. However, it's commendable that you have gained a lot of experience in HR. A generalist role is not similar to a coordinator profile. Also, you mentioned that there are no seniors present; why not take charge of all the core HR responsibilities in your company? You have the experience. You can start handling issues related to core HR terms within your company. I wouldn't recommend a short-term course; you already have enough experience. You don't need a short-term course to gain knowledge of a single term. Continuous learning is beneficial, but you can practically learn and apply this in your current company. Additionally, you can explore other opportunities if you are not fully satisfied with your current company. Since there are no senior profiles guiding you, it can either be positive or negative for your growth. The choice is yours.
