Hello,

Can anybody suggest me? As I have recently joined a software company as a recruitment executive. I just wanted to know if this will add an advantage to make my career in HR profile or not.

Thanks,
Nancy

Hey Nancy,

First of all, congratulations on your new job. Secondly, recruitment is just one of the functions of HR, and it surely will add value...but yes, if you want to go for a generalist profile in the future, try to develop those skills side by side. Learn other functions while you are on the job here.

Also, you didn't mention if this is your first job. If it is, it will certainly add value to your career. If not, I would like to know about your past experience as well.

All the best.

Hello Nancy,

Please respond to Archna's queries.

Further to what Archna mentioned, let me also add that though recruitment is only ONE aspect of HR, it, in fact, touches upon the core of the HR function, which deals with human beings. In fact, no other area in HR (basically core HR functions) deals DIRECTLY with human beings as recruitment does. This is where you get a chance to learn about human behavior and the various interpersonal relationships that you will need to handle head-on as you climb the corporate ladder, where you would be doing LESS recruitment and MORE core HR work.

If you look at recruitment as just filling up positions, then you are missing a big chance to learn the skills that you may not get again in your whole career.

Thanks for your suggestion. This is not my first job as I previously worked with a consultancy. I wanted to make my career in HR profile only, and I just want to know if there are any growth opportunities as well as exposure, as my role involves recruiting candidates in a software company. No generalist profile.

Hello Nancy,

Growth is always there even in a recruitment job—only that most HR professionals prefer a Core HR job. It's more a matter of personal preference than only related to growth. If you too fall into the same category, suggest keeping your eyes open for suitable Core HR openings, BUT DON'T NEGLECT your present recruitment job. Like I mentioned, this would give you a lot of exposure to human attributes and develop your interpersonal relationship skills, something that will stand you in good stead in your future career.

All the Best.

Hey Nancy,

Thanks for the reply.

As TS suggested, keep an eye on new openings where you can explore different profiles. Since you have prior experience working in a consultancy, the company may consider offering you a position as a recruiter or in a related profile.

Learn from your peers who handle various HR functions, observe, learn, and start asking questions in your free time. Over time, you will develop skills. Then, you can start interviewing for a generalist profile. Reflect on what you have learned and identify areas where you can improve.

Though it may seem challenging, believe me, the results will pleasantly surprise you.

God bless.

Hi Nancy,

Thanks for the reply.

As TS suggested, keep an eye on new openings where you can explore different profiles. Since you have previous experience working in a consultancy, the company may offer you a position as a recruiter or in a related profile.

Learn from your peers who handle other HR functions, observe, learn, and start asking questions in your free time. Gradually, you will develop new skills. Then, consider interviewing for a generalist profile. Reflect on what you already know and identify areas where you can improve.

Though it may seem challenging, believe me, the results will pleasantly surprise you.

God bless.
