The Government of India brought forth the Minimum Wages Act, providing for the fixation of minimum wages for unorganized workers. Currently, the Act has 45 scheduled employments in the Central sphere and 1232 in the State sphere. It stipulates that the minimum wage should not be below Rs 45 per day for any worker, with an average employment for 25 days in a month. The following states have fixed minimum wages: Andaman & Nicobar, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir*, Orissa, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Assam*, Karnataka, Punjab, Bihar*, Kerala, Rajasthan, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, Tamil Nadu*, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Gujarat, Manipur*, Uttar Pradesh*, Haryana, Meghalaya*, West Bengal. Maharashtra is not among them.

Maharashtra also has minimum wages fixed by the government, which are revised from time to time. The daily wage earner's wages should be at par with the minimum wages if paid monthly.
