I am a final year MBA student. The problem with me is that I have 3 offers to do my main project.

1. A HR project in a government company (big concern) that does not have an HR department, but they are ready to permit me to establish one (though I cannot do a performance appraisal project).

2. A small mill with an HR manager and an assistant HR manager who gave me permission to choose any HR project topic. Here, I can choose to do a performance appraisal project.

3. A big MNC granted me permission to work on an HR project preparing an induction manual for employees. However, the project will be based on secondary data. My professor says that doing a project with secondary data is useless.

I am in a dilemma. Please help me decide which option will be good for my career and future placements. (My college does not have campus interviews or a placement cell.) Which project has better scope? Please help me.

Hello,

Please refer to the third section in the induction manual for further details.

Reasons:

1. In the public sector, you may not be certain about the project you will be assigned to.
2. Conducting a performance appraisal in a small mill may not be beneficial. Moreover, when you start your first job, it will primarily involve recruitment and induction. It may take up to ten years before you delve into performance management.
3. Creating an induction manual using secondary data will provide you with practical experience related to your initial job role. You are likely to handle similar tasks with secondary data in your first job. Moreover, preparing an induction manual will also equip you for roles in recruitment.

Dear Student,

I also recommend opting for the third option for the following reasons:

- The MNC culture will surely give you insight into professional HR.
- Nowadays, if an HR student is conceptually strong, there is no need to worry about placements. The third option will provide you with a new vision, different from what a student envisions at the institute.
- While working on the project, strive to go the extra mile to learn beyond your summer project topics.

Best of luck...

Prof. Prashant
