Dear All,
I am an HR Assistant working in an IT company in Pune. I have a query regarding the granted leaves.
Situation: In our company, we grant 5 casual leaves and 10 sick leaves to all employees. No leaves are carried forward. As this is year-end, employees want to use their granted leaves.
My questions are:
1) Can we grant them casual leaves even if they have a sick leave balance only? For example, if Employee X has 8 sick leaves left, can he use them for a family vacation?
2) How lenient can the company be in this regard?
3) What is the general trend in all IT companies?
4) We are allowing employees to use their sick leaves for this year; how correct is it?
Thank you.

Dear Anjali,
Further to your query on CL & SL, I wish to inform you that it is always better that you do not allow your employees to follow that sort of practice. Once you start, it will become difficult for HR personnel in your company to revert back to the earlier system. While the employee may be intelligent enough to claim SL even if he is well, the HR team also realizes this trick. But at times, we do not say anything in that regard. That much liberty we may give to our employees. However, kindly consider the employee characteristics as well. A good performer may be allowed that much freedom.
Of course, many a time, if it comes from the employee's immediate superior, HR may not be able to do anything.
As of now, you may issue a Circular on employees using their CL/SL/PL, etc., to the fullest extent in the coming year in order to assist them in not losing the leave benefit.
