That depends on the nature of job. It can be six months, one year or even two years. But the period of probation should not be to misuse the concept.

Period of probation in a company

The period of probation in a company depends upon the company's policy. Some companies allow a 3-month probation period, while others have a probation period of 6 months to one year. The company has the sole right to extend the probation period for another 3 months, 6 months, or a year if it is found that the job performance of the probationary employee is not up to the desired level.

Probation Period Variability

It is 6 months or 3 months, which varies from company to company. Some companies will consider you a confirmed employee from the date of joining, but leaving the company with a 30- or 90-day notice period is vice versa.

Maximum Duration of Probation

The maximum duration of probation is provided in the applicable rules. In the case of industrial establishments, it is necessary to follow the provisions in Certified Standing Orders or the Model Standing Orders. At the end of the probation period, the suitability of the employee for being retained in service should be assessed. In cases of unsatisfactory service, the probation period can be extended, but it cannot be extended indefinitely.

Please try to refer to the applicable rules in this regard. If there are still any queries, please come back with full details of the rules applicable.
