Dear HR Experts,

I am a student trying to finish my bachelor's by writing my thesis on "The preferred leadership style of Generation Z." To complete my thesis, I would like to gain some insight from an HR point of view on my research.

The aim of my study

The aim of my study is to identify Generation Z's preferred leadership style for their current and future workplace. This is for managers to develop a better understanding of this generation to create a leadership strategy that could be used to attract and retain this generation at the workplace.

Research sub-questions

As multiple factors correlate with this research, I have created multiple sub-questions:

- Who is Generation Z?
- What are the characteristics Generation Z prefers in the workplace?
- What does Generation Z prefer regarding leadership characteristics?

To answer these questions, I have conducted a questionnaire among the target group, Generation Z. The questions covered these different topics: standard characteristics, personality traits, preferred workplace characteristics, preferred leader traits, preferred leadership style, and the influence of leadership on attraction and retention.

Findings from the questionnaire

The results of the questionnaire show that Generation Z thinks of themselves as independent workers, optimistic, creative, loyal, and hard workers.

The results also show that Generation Z would like to work at a workplace that is open-minded, flexible, diverse, community-oriented, and dynamic.

Furthermore, the results show that the leadership characteristics Generation Z is looking for are honesty, support, caring, inspiring, and competence.

Moreover, on the question of whether Generation Z participants find that the leadership style conducted by the leader/workplace influences their decision to apply and to retain at the workplace, the majority of the respondents answered 'yes' to both questions.

Lastly, the results of the questionnaire show that the top 3 preferred leadership styles chosen by the Generation Z participants are charismatic leadership, people-oriented leadership, and transformational leadership.

Request for feedback

However, to gain further insight, I would like to know your feedback and view on this topic and research.

Do you recognize any of the findings, or do you not recognize them at all? Do you believe there is a match with the knowledge that you have already had, or not at all?

Furthermore, do you believe my research is valid and relevant to today's workplace environment? Would you like to gain this knowledge, or do you believe it is not needed anymore or at all?

Thank you for reading; please help a student out!

Kind regards
