The Generation Gap: A Story of Understanding
This is the story about the thinking of the young generation. The generation gap is always a matter of misunderstanding between the young and old generations. Why? It is because people from the older generation want to follow old traditions without any knowledge and proper understanding. However, the "Young Generation of Today is capable of self-decision-making with appropriate logic," as shown in my story:
Aaradhana was a teacher in a private school. Her mother was a widow who used to stitch women's clothes for her livelihood. After the death of Aaradhana's father, her mother was expelled from her matrimonial house and began to stitch clothes with the help of her savings. One day, a matchmaker lady came to her home to talk about her daughter's marriage. She showed some pictures to Aaradhana's mother to select the perfect match for her daughter. Aaradhana's mother wanted to get her daughter married soon because she was her only child.
Aaradhana's mother selected a boy named Ravi from a very rich family because she wanted to see her daughter happy in a rich family like a queen. After the decision, she decided to meet the family one day.
When she met the family members with her daughter, Aaradhana realized that besides the richness of that family, the male members were alcoholic in nature. Aaradhana met Ravi to learn about his family. Ravi told her, "We believe in enjoying life in a proper way. In my family, the women also have the freedom to drink. So, you can say OUR FAMILY IS MODERN IN NATURE."
Aaradhana replied, "My father was alcoholic in nature. Due to the consumption of alcohol every day, his health began to deteriorate day by day, and one day, he died and left me and my mother alone in this world. So, I don't want to marry you." Aaradhana refused to marry Ravi and went back home with her mother.
When Aaradhana's mother began to scold her daughter, Aaradhana said to her mother, "My father was also a drunk person. He wasted all his money on alcohol and died of liver failure. Alcohol is the silent killer and turns humans into devils. You became a widow at an early age; how can you see the same condition for me?"
Aaradhana's mother said, "I am the mother of a girl. Parents of girls are always seen as inferior to boys' parents."
Aaradhana asked, "What do you mean? My maternal grandmother married you to a drunk person because you are four sisters and one brother, and you had seen a hellish life. You are trying to give me a hellish life which you had already suffered after marriage. You have completed my studies, and now I am a teacher. I can judge between right and wrong."
Aaradhana's mother replied, "I want to give you a luxurious life, not a hellish life. But you have shown me the real picture of Ravi and his family. I was only 12th pass because my parents had very little money for their big family. That's why my sisters and I were considered a burden in my parents' house. I wanted to educate you to become economically independent because after the death of your father, my in-laws expelled me with you, and my parents did not give me any help because of my two unmarried sisters and one brother. But I am glad to know that you are not only educated, but your thinking is also independent in nature. My parents married me to a drunken person, who gave me a hellish life. But you are not a coward; you have proved that girls are not inferior to boys."
Aaradhana said, "I am happy to see that you can understand and realize everything. The generation gap arises when old people want to stick to their own decisions without realizing whether they are right or wrong. Your young generation is capable of self-decision-making and can take the right step to select the right path because marriage is an important part of our life, not a compromise between two families."
Aaradhana's mother agreed with her decision and smiled.

In this modern society, each one of us is free to make his or her choice, and parents should never impose their decisions on children, except for expressing their viewpoints and guidance where necessary.
The Wisdom of the Older Generation
However, concerning the generation gap, the older generation has experienced more years of life and naturally has more wisdom and experience than the younger generation, making them quite capable of perceiving things according to their wisdom and experience. The story is undoubtedly great, but it reflects the situation that existed in the pre-21st century period. We are now in the 21st century, where both generations are equally educated and aware of the pros and cons of everything.

In my opinion, the generation gap arises because of a lack of maturity. Maturity is nothing but emotional intelligence. As the mother is, so is the daughter. Both Araadhanaa and her beloved mother have the emotional intelligence to understand and weigh the pros and cons of the practical truth behind their respective viewpoints and avoided a risky marriage proposal that ultimately bridged their generation gap.

Aaradhana is an intelligent girl. As is often seen in conservative families, parents are interested in marrying their daughter into a wealthy family, even if the boy (husband) has some "weaknesses"—which they conveniently overlook because the family is rich. The same situation applies in this story. However, Aaradhana is bold enough to say a big "NO" to her mother and is not swayed by the "modern life" led by the boy's family. She ultimately convinces her mother that marriage is not a compromise between two families but an essential part of her life. Aaradhana is not interested in the "outer frills" but is focused on marrying a man who loves, cares for, and understands her.
