Dear all,

I would be glad if someone could share details on how HR functions differ in the IT industry compared to other industries. I have a meeting scheduled with the CEO of an IT company, and since I have never worked in this sector, I want to be well-prepared.

Please provide insights on the key points that I should note.

Dear Tanya,

What is the purpose of the meeting with the CEO from the IT company? Have you applied for a job, or will you meet him as a consultant?

Your question is "if someone can share details on how different one HR works in the IT Industry compared to some other industry." It is not a question of the industry, but what matters is how this company is different from any other company!

In the IT industry or otherwise, HR functions by and large remain the same. Everything depends on the kind of role you will be assigned. Even if you are in the IT industry, what if you are given very basic tasks like recruitment, payroll, joining formalities, etc.? In what way will it be different from any other industry?

In the meeting with the CEO, ask him what people-related challenges he faces. Is it employee attrition, lack of teamwork, or something else? Once you understand this, you should be able to provide an instantaneous solution.

By the way, most CEOs have an orientation towards cost reduction. Therefore, rather than getting into the usual HR rhetoric or jargon, explain to him what you did in the past to reduce the costs related to the HR department.

All the best!

Dear prospective IT HR candidate,

Unlike manufacturing organizations, where HR will be called upon to deal with a large number of skilled workers (perhaps unionized, which will add a different flavor), in IT, they will be dealing with highly educated knowledge workers who are exposed to state-of-the-art hardware and software technologies. These workers question everything and want to understand the 'why' behind everything, including HR policies.

While the job content may not materially differ, displaying priorities, approach, and a unique sensitivity to their high-level expectations is crucial for HR. IT workers operate under tremendous pressure driven by deadlines, targets, and maintaining the quality of work to compete in fiercely competitive international markets. HR policies need to strike a balance to meet the demands of both sides and enable growth in this demanding work environment.
