Understanding Workplace Bullying and Harassment

One of the most common and unresolved workplace issues is bullying and harassment. If you conduct a thorough study using the internet or business journals, you will find an alarming rate of at least one in three employees who have either been victims of bullying and harassment or have witnessed a co-worker being bullied and harassed.

Debunking Myths About Workplace Bullying

It is a myth that only certain kinds of companies, whether big or small, Fortune 500 or non-Fortune 500, experience bullying and harassment in their workplace. Another common myth is that only specific levels of employees get harassed and bullied, or that individuals in the early years of their careers are more susceptible to bullying and harassment. There is also a misconception that employees who have just joined or are new to a company get bullied as part of a cultural orientation, which supposedly settles after a reasonable period of time.

Finally, there is a myth that women, economically weaker sections, or employees from minority communities are the primary targets of bullying. The fact of the matter is, regardless of your seniority or background, anyone can be a target and victim of bullying and harassment. If you are not well-prepared to tackle this threat or are entirely dependent on the company to protect you, you may succumb to it.
